If with DOD you mean Day of Defeat, why you want use a gamepad inside a FPS which is best controlled with keyboard and mouse? Gamepads are much more suited for racing or 3rd person games.Also not all games need to support controllers.
Besides I personally wouldn't buy that gamepad. It's a budget one (if you have the GameStop PC Advanced Controller) which has many issues.

thanks for your reply ,yep it is a game stop controller you are correct i bought it to run laptop through the tv with hdmi cable and not use keyboard or mouse ,it is budget pad any way it still wont work again thanks for reply

Try it in some game which should obviously support gamepad - a racing game. If the gamepad will not work even there, is probably a issue with the driver or with the gamepad itself. Thats why I tell people that is better to invest a bit more and buy the X-Box 360 gamepad. It works flawlessy under Windows and the button overlay of most recent games are exactly made for this controller.

thanks for advice it will work with other games just tried it so happy days its just with day of defeat have my old mouse back in use for that cheers

Why do people complain about a person's personal preferences when they ask a question instead of simply answering the question? They aren't asking you to stop playing how you prefer to play. I came seeking the same answer as kartoonhead. He is probably trying to seek out this information because HE wants to play it that way. He didn't come to find out what you think popular OPINION is about it. I can't shoot for anything with a controller, but I still like playing that way over the keyboard and mouse. My best friend kicks ass with a controller. He gets headshots quicker than any person I have EVER seen on a keyboard and mouse. A keyboard and mouse being better than a controller for fps is an opinion, not a fact.

If you friend is that good without aim assist / hacking he should entering competitions or streaming because he has a unique skill.
