DirectX 11 causing cpu to overheat.
Hi,
I've noted theres a few posts here and there that seem similar to this issue, but they seem either a little dated or without much of a solution.

Basically whenever I run a game that uses DirectX 11, my cpu overheats forcing the pc to turn itself off. At first I didn't know what was causing it... but heres how I figured it out.

I have Civ 5, and when you start the games it gives you the option of running in DirectX 9, or DirectX 10 & 11 (which it recommends).

In DirectX 11, my cpu fan would instantly fire into action and would make alot of noise. I'd get maybe 20 mins of gameplay and my computer would shut down. I first turned all the graphic settings down, but no change.

Thing was I've had Civ5 for a while and I remember playing it ages ago with no issues at all, so the other week I tried using the other option to use DirectX 9. Now the game runs fine, even with all the graphic settings to max. My cpu fan doesn't even change from its standard "idling" speed when I boot it up in this mode.

I tried looking into reinstalling the DirectX 11 drivers, but it seems thats impossible because its an integral part of windows 7 now. So I'm at somewhat of a loss as to what to do...

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Yea your CPU or GPU is overheating, could be either one really. If the OS runs all day without issues until u start playing games, I'd say the issue is your GPU, overall system cooling, or the GPU Drivers.

DX is not going to by itself affect your CPU.
First, try reinstalling DirectX > http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

What are your hardware specs?
What drivers you using?
What CPU/GPU temps do u get during games?

could also be poor case cooling
or improper cpu cooler installation

Thanks, I did look for those drivers but the installer I downloaded from the windows site just said they were up-to-date!

I know what your saying about DX not affecting CPU thats why I was shocked when I noticed the difference between using DX9 and 11, but it only occurs when playing games using DirectX 11, and with Civ only when I tell it use DirectX 11 instead of 9.

Specs:
AMD FX 8120 - 8 Core, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 570

Temps: (In Civ5, after 15 mins of play)

...........Idle............DX9........DX11
CPU.....38..............62...........73
GPU.....34..............52...........57

The other major difference is, like said in the orginal post, the cpu fan goes crazy when playing in DX11, whilst in 9 I can't really tell the difference.

Those Temps are after installing the new drivers, they have lowered the temp by about 2-3, in both instances, but there is still a hugh difference between the performance of DX9 and DX11 in the same game :S. I'm going to check a few other games that have been doing it and see what happens in them...

Yea CPU is getting way too hot, needs better cooling.
GPU temps are fine.

what cpu cooler are you using?
SilentHorizon Apr 13, 2014 @ 8:49am
It could be something wrong with the thermal paste, get some more thermal paste and put it on and see it that works.'

Just like _|_ said, it would be nice to know what cooler your using.

Its a Corsair liquid cooling system.

H40 is about the only indentifier I can find on it.

H40 is a good cooler, is there a lot of dust in the radiator?
Pyrkie Apr 13, 2014 @ 9:20am
Nope clean it frequently, as in I unscrew it from the fan and get all the dust off it. Was first thing I did a few weeks back when I noticed the problem. Wasn't even that bad then tbh.
Thinking maybe the paste has gone, will have to try that next I guess.

what fan is on it?

the corsair liquid coolers come with thermal paste on the pump, but need new paste applied each time its removed

Its attached to the large fan at the back of the case, never removed the pump from the cpu
SilentHorizon Apr 13, 2014 @ 2:37pm
All I can think of is that thermal paste. If you have some thermal paste, I would take the cooler off and put some on the cpu.

Still don't understand however why I get such a hugh difference between DX9 and 11 in the same game :/
SilentHorizon Apr 13, 2014 @ 2:46pm
It probably is more cpu taxing than dx9.
Pyrkie Apr 13, 2014 @ 2:48pm
no doubt... but 10 extra heat is alot of extra taxing, maybe its just something uniqe to my set up.. still sucks thou
