Gateway DX4870 + GeForce GTX 650 = startup anamoly. Can anyone help?
So while me and my g/f were playing ff14: ARR, she was having slowdowns and such. So I decide to upgrade my vid card from the geforce gt 640 to the GTX 650 and give her the 640.
The GT 640 is working fine for her, but I am having troubles with the 650.

At first it just hung at my Gateway BIOS screen for a few minutes. I hear post beeps, singular and very spaced out. (maybe 30 seconds between, maybe more) Eventually the vid card post info appears. What happens next has varied.
First time it just sat at a black screen. So naturally I restart and tried to go into bios settings.
This is where I learned I can't do anything in the bios with the vid card in. Mashing the delete key it will say entering setup, but then eventually goes to the vid card post and back to the black screen.

So I pull the card out, hook up the onbaord video, and after some googling via my tablet, I went into the bios seeking the "secure boot" option and the "launch cfm" option. I found neither in my bios. So I think "maybe disabling quiet boot will also disable secure boot"

This is saved and then I get the good ol' American Megatrends BIOS screen. it displays info and all looks good, so I kill the power before it actually starts starting up and pop the 650 back in. On the next startup attempt I get the American Megatrends logo, but this is all I get. No info, no prompts, nothing. After it does the very spaced out 3 post beeps, I get the Vid card post screen for a few secs and then it starts Windows.

Some quick additional info I should probably mention:
During the bios screens, with the 650 hooked up it only displays on my TV, once it gets to the vid card post it only displays on my monitor. (until windows starts then it adjusts for my multimonitor setup)
Also, when the bios appears to be hanging with the 650 in I cannot enter setup or select boot devices.

My roommate suggested that perhaps the motherboard doesn't support PCIe 3.0 at first, but I am using it as I type this, I would think if the mobo didn't support PCIe 3.0 it wouldn't work at all.

I tried looking up the mobo specs but I can't find any info on what the PCIe slot is. (this is what I get for being lazy and buying a manufactured one this time, rather than building one)

I'm asking here, really because I don't know where else to ask. I'm not normally the guy who needs help, so much as I normally give the help. But we all need help sometimes I guess...

So if anyone has any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I gotta decide if this is fixable or if I should return the card and just buy my g/f the same card I already had.

UPDATE:
I just timed the start up. From the moment I press the power button to the moment I see the "Starting Windows" screen 1 minute and 50 seconds passes.
I also timed the time between post beeps, which was 30 seconds apart.

pci-e 3.0 cards will work in 2.0 and earlier slots
3.0 and 2.0 offer no difference for single gpu setups

what power supply do you have?
if its an oem pc, upgrade the psu when you get a new gpu

Corsair CX500.
I'm ignoring it as a possible cause, because the 640 never had these issues and according to reports this card should actually use 1 less watt.

GTX 650 needs additional 6-pin PCI-E power cable to supply power to it, if you just plugged the card in like GT 640 and didnt connect the power cable this may be the issue.

gtx650 should have a pci-e power connector, make sure its plugged in

the ddr5 ver of the gt640 is 49w and does not have a pci-e power connector

It came with an adapter so I can connect it to 2 IDE power cables. I have it hooked up with such.

cx500 should have a pci-e power connector, use that instead of the molex adapters

Corsair CX500 PSU comes with two 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors for graphics cards so you dont really need to hook it up through adaptor.

I did not see it as part of my intial review of my power connectors, I shall review them again and report back.

So I find the 6-pin connectors (had em ziptied and tucked into a drive bay) and hooked it up, but it did not make a difference.

You could try the card with your GF's PC if she has good enough PSU. If it acts same way with both PC's then it's probably just faulty card.

That is a thought. Her PCI-E slot alarms me, as it resembles a PCI slot in that it doesn't have the notch hook. I hesitated and thought the 640 wouldn't work but it did. So I guess I can presume the 650 will. I'll have to transfer power supplies too.

Well I got around to testing the vid card in her machine, and unfortunately her's started right up. ( I was almost mad at how fast I saw "Starting Windows")
So I'm guessing this rules out faulty vid card?

I'm really at a loss here...

So I guess no one else has any thoughts on this?
Shall I just deal with the 2+ minute start up until I can get around to getting a new mobo?

not all pci-e slots have a latch to hold the card in

it should not take more than 10 seconds to get past bios

it it takes that long, there could be other problems

try resetting bios to defaults, and bare minimums, cpu/heatsink, 1 dimm, mobo header connectors for power/reset/lights, no drives
see how long it takes to say no os
keep adding parts and see what causes delays

if it is the gpu, it could be a bad ground or a misplaced standoff under the mobo

Resetting the bios to defaults causes it to not boot. I have to, at the very least, shut quiet boot off or it will only give me a black screen after the vid card post info.
I've tried booting with the bare minimum in. The posts take forever as long as the vid card is in. Nothing else seemed to matter.
Also a reminder, everything worked fine with the 640 in.
