some of the earlier dvd-rom drives had poor compatability, and could not read cd-r discs
bd-rom drive should still be able to read cd-rom and dvd-rom discs
DTSOFT Virtual CdRom has a driver version 6.1.7601.17514. I got to this by clicking on properties and going under the "driver" tab. Oh also I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium (that's what GeForce says I use) for my OS. If this helps in any way as well.
However if I am not looking at the right things, wrong places, or doing something not right, then please do criticize me and help me out. I'm going to eventually learn all this anyways - I want to be able to build my own or be able to upgrade it myself eventually. I feel so dumb seeing as so many others already know this ='(
Anyways, I know the forums said not to really post links or something but this is the exact thing I have (for the most part, it looks exactly the same): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Super-Writemaster-SH-S222-DVD-RW-IDE-Desktop-Optical-Drive-/191054572569?pt=US_CD_DVD_Blu_Ray_Drives&hash=item2c7bbd6c19
Problem is, I don't think I actually have it visible in my computer I guess? I only have the hard drives (c:) and (d:) and the (f:)
Anyways.. when you right click "my computer" there should be an option "manage" or alike with the blue/yellow shield symbol. This will open computer management console.
When you go to the device manager are there any components marked with a yellow "!" ? What devices are listed under "dvd/cd-rom drives"? use the white arrow to toggle components shown.
Does it look something like this in disk management? http://winsupersite.com/site-files/winsupersite.com/files/archive/winsupersite.com/content/content/128148/showcase/winvista_install_add01.jpg
Anyways. my computer management looks exactly like the picture, but with three "volumes" and none have a yellow "!". The volumes listed are: (C:), (D:), and System Reserved. The rest of the information is just the same, but under "healthy" there is just some things written in paranthesis such as; (boot, page file, primary partition is in all, and few others).
For the "CD-ROM 0" it says just like the picture posted in the link, except mine has "DVD (F:)" in which case was said to be the virtual drive in the actions of mounting images for torrenting games and such. EDIT: Also, going under "Device Manager" and selecting the DVD/CD-ROM drives, the only one listed is the virtual one (Daemon tools application, semi-explained in last paragraph). Last two paragraphs are just random reads and off topic, whomever reading this may just end here and leave a reply!
In other news, I just checked my laptop to see the difference in why my computer's CD drive is not working, and it just goes to show that my computer probably just doesn't have the CD ROM drive actually is "installed". Quotations used in the sense that it may be installed but something in my computer is not connecting it fully. You never know! Well in this case I actually don't know!
My laptop, when I checked for the CD ROM has it listed and when I right-clicked then "eject", it actually ejected the CD drive. My computer does not have this option. My laptop also had it listed (I forgot as what) but as (D:) then (F:). However, (F:) was just the same as my computer, it's Daemon Tools application installed on the computers where I can "mount" images. So in other sense a torrenting device? =D
Since your bd-drive doesn't show up on either device manager or disk manager it is probably broken or the SATA-Cable is not connected properly. It would be best to find someone who is kinda familiar with pc to check BIOS and test another SATA-Port on the mainboard.
Also, thanks. My mom has a buddy who can look over it. Although I'm tempted to myself, it didn't look that hard to see if it's connected or not but for any troubleshooting or anything of the such I won't be able to do to make sure the drive is indeed installed properly. Stupid friend -.- Good thing he really wasn't my friend! Hahaha. Sigh, oh well. Thank you guys so much for your help!! I'm jelous of your knowledge!! Haha.
