420 is about the same as a 610
http://www.hwcompare.com/15542/geforce-gt-420-vs-radeon-r7-260x/
Look on Wikipedia yourself:
AMD Radeon Rx 200 series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Volcanic_Islands_.28Rx_200.29_Series
Nvidia GeForce GTX 600 series

As you can see the R7 260X has over 10 times more GFLOPS and similarly it has around 10 (plus or minus a few) times the other stats like memory bandwidth or fillrates for pixels and textures. Also you may be able to overclock it more and it already has a factory overclock.
If your current card is a GT 610 this is a great upgrade.
It may be the difference between not being able to run a game at all at FPS that allow you to play properly even at lowest settings (GT 610) and being able to run it at high settings with good FPS (R7 260X).
If you want to shell out a bit more money the R9 270 or R9 270X are also very good and might last you a little bit longer. If you would like to get a card very similar to the R7 260X in performance for a bunch cheaper I recommend you look at the HD 7790 which is nearly the same card with 1GB and a lower clock (I overclocked mine to 1200~ Mhz though) and is selling around or under $100 after rebates in the USA.
But this GPU Comes with 2 free games so its really a better deal
a 610 isnt a gaming gpu, its more for like general and media center use.
Also sorry for saying the HD 7790 was the better deal, that is old information that is out of date. Currently there is a R7 260X that is the best deal and does come with 2 free games for only $120~ after rebate here:
$120~ after rebate R7 260X 2 GB GPU + 2 free games

In comparison the cheapest HD 7790 is $110~ and comes with no free games.

So my previous information was out of date and from time when the HD 7790 was $95~ and the R7 260X 2GB was $140~ without free games.
Now the R7 260X 2GB is indeed the best deal (the extra $10 is worth the games & extra GB RAM and extra factory overclock) which is great and I'm recommending this in all my saved builds now instead of the HD 7790 I used to.
