It it helpful to pick right antivirus.

I would stay away from McAfee and Nortan. They're not very good antivirus.
McAfee or AVG Internet Securtey or any in the top 4.

Norton 360 is a very aggressive full suite product and scores well in the IT community.

Microsoft Security Essentials
If you have decent web use habits and don't do anythign too shady, Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender (in Win8) is more than solid. Been using it for a few years, it runs quietly in the background, doesn't eat too many resources when scanning, and I haven't had any nasties show up.
If you have windows xp, just upgrade your os.

If you have windows vista or windows 7 then get microsoft security essentials.

If you have windows 8 then you already have "Microsoft security essentials" by default, only it's been renamed to windows defender.

It's all you need.
Microsoft Security Essentials is free to anyone with a legal copy of windows, and it works.
I'd say go with Kaspersky PURE 3.0, i have not had any problems using it, plus its easy as hell to setup, you also have a gaming profile in the settings that you can enable and check so that auto updates dont happen while in full screen game mode plus some others, ive got 16GB Ram and i have had not one problem using it, used PURE for last 3/4 Yrs without any crap/hitches
I've been using AVG for years, Used Limewire and AVG caught everything it needed to. There are pleany of free Antivirus programs out there, just as good. I don't see any reason why you should have to pay for it unless you have a business computer. In that case maybe you should consider Norton, McAffe, and some of the other ones. Its just a matter of getting use to the antivirus program, getting around and its visual appeal, they all pretty mush do a great job.
I used to think Norton was a decent antivirus, but then I took a Trojan.Vundo to the hard drive. MSE does not detect ♥♥♥♥, just look at scan reports of malicious files on Virustotal.
I use Norton 360. Not free but does well with great features. I've used Norton for quite a few decades and never let me down. Not one virus or anything causing me an issue. I know most prefer the free options over the pay ones. It's a personal choice overall. Only thing people complain about the most is system usage and not being free. But with a modern highend system there are no performance issues at all. Especially with uber high speed SSD or RAID systems.

I work for a fortune 500 company and even with the smaller compaines I've worked for they all use Norton. Just the full scans is what beats up the disk. A normal computer gets beaten up. High speed disk with a good PC has no impact in my experience.
