Samsung 990 SSD 2TB on a MSI intel z690 motherboard
I found a PC with a MSI intel z690 motherboard. But its not yet available(in stock). I will upgrade the storage with probably a Samsung 990 SSD 2TB.
I want buy the SSD now becaus i can buy it cheap at the moment.
Since its the first time i will upgrade a pc have a few small question.

1. I don't know exactly what specific model the motherboard will be but MSI and the samsung SSD's are very common brands so i asume they are compatible?

2. Some SSD's (such as the samsung 990)come with a heatsink. Should i use it or just it or just use the covers of the motherboard?

3. The motherboard has 4 SSD slots. 1ssd is placed by the manufacturer in slot 1. Does it matter what slot i use for the second?

look up the board manual
m2. has several types
m key = nvme,
b key = sata,
e key = bt/wifi nic,
m.sata = old style m.sata ssd only not b key sata
I would be very confident in saying that your two components are compatible

If you have both, maybe it's best to compare their effectiveness yourself. Both should reduce the heat. By how much is something only you can determine. I use my board's heatsink and it's fine--reduce the heat by 7-8 deg C.

If you use the first slot as an nvm-e, it's possible one or more other slots will then only accommodate sata and/or the first slot will be the only one able to accommodate a PCI-e 5.0 nvm-e. You would need to consult the board schematic whenever you find out exactly what you're getting.
e is different key, will not work in m/b keyed slots
I have a MSI z690 carbon wifi, you can put any NVMe in there. It's not a weird proprietary board. And the Samsung 990 pro isn't a weird proprietary NVMe. And most modern motherboards have m.2 slots for storage. There's not too much compatibility to juggle, but if you have any questions refer to the specific motherboard manual.

I've run a Samsung 970 evo, a Samsung 980 pro, a WD_BLACK SN850X, an Intel 660p, I'm going to put in a 4TB Crucial P3 NVMe drive to replace the Intel 660p. Hasn't been any issues and a 990 Pro wouldn't be any different.
