DDR5-7200 showing 4800
I was getting a game to work on my bro pc and notice he can’t boot using xmp and his ram is reading 4800. He has a Gigabyte X670 and it only seems to support up to 6600. What does he have to do to get that ram speed up?

If he can't use XMP (at all) then he would be stuck at the default spec for the RAM.

So I guess the question is why can't he use XMP? I know when I built my DDR5 system back in 2022 that my motherboard had lots of BIOS updates focusing on RAM compatibility and stability and I needed to update. And I have seen that with other DDR5 boards aside from my own, regardless of manufacturer.

So I guess the question is what BIOS version is he running, how far behind on BIOS updates are they? And do any of the updates specifically deal with RAM compatibility, stability, XMP? If yes, update that BIOS and see where you land. That's what I'd look at first. Just being able to use XMP would solve all the problems, so that's what I'd focus on.

Also what are his specs, what Gigabyte X670 board is he specifically using. Additionally what RAM is he specifically using?

Make sure the bios is updated to ensure RAM compatibility

I think he has a Gigabyte X670 AORUS ELITE AX and G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 32 GB Ram.
He has a 7800x3d and 7900xtx, so he's not hurting for fps. We figure the BIOS would have to be flashed. I’ll have to do that next time I’m there. He has 200 fps and 10 more wouldn't hurt. lol.

Maybe he put his RAM in wrong slots?
It should be in 2nd and 4th slot in most motherboards. If EXPO doesn’t work then he needs to manually set it to 6000Mhz or so.
Does it even have EXPO profile? Or intel XMP? They are similar but not the same. I try to buy RAM with the right profile for the CPU.

Julien, cut it out. 20 NOV 2023 a las 2:21 p. m.
Increase the SoC and VDD/Q voltage. /s

You won't see any benefits of 7200 MT/s over 6000 MT/s on a Ryzen 7000 chip with a single CCD. You could see benefits when going above 8000 MT/s when running in gear 2, but I think that's hardly achievable.

Increase the IF (try 2200 MHz), run UCLK at the same frequency as the MemCLK. Start at 6000 MT/s and increase the frequency from there while keeping the ratio of UCLK to MemCLK at 1 (1:1).
Or better, if you have time, run at 6000 MT/s and tighten the timings.

For X3D Ryzen on AM5 you generally want 5800-6400 RAM anyways

Can you explain the "he can't boot with xmp" thing more?

Yeah I’m pretty sure the ram is in the 2nd and 4th slot. It’s XMP and if I knew that I would have got EXPO Ram myself.

Say what? That sounds like a lot of work, think I just tell him “they said buy new ram” lol. I'll have to take notes and search his Manual to find all that.

Once xmp is enabled it won’t boot up and turns its self back off.

as far as i can tell thats INTEL ram not specifically designed for AMD

try setting to xmp2 then turn down ram frequency 200 at a time till it boots.
start at 6600
(NOT SURE WHAT THOSE SETTINGS ARE CALLED ON A AMD M.B.)

If it's new RAM return it and buy something else.

Oh, ok. did you disable "memory context restore"?

Once you enable XMP and save & exit the BIOS.

The PC will go through a training cycle; this can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on how much RAM is installed. Please just wait and let it do the shutdown + power on cycles. This is nothing new, even DDR3 systems did that, such as AMD 990FX Chipsets.

XMP runs fine on 7000 series boards. I was using a CL32 6400 kit on my X670E/7800X3D combo with zero issues.
