2.5gb RAM used when only on desktop?

i noticed that when i am only on my desktop, running no other programs at all it says i am using 2.5gb of ram which is roughly 42% of my 6gb of RAM.

why does it say this and will it affect the ram available for when i play games?

p.s- there are some background processes runing obviously, but they take up no more than like 150mb total

Yes, if you play a game that needs more than 4GB you may experience slowdowns.
