I've tried about 25 different products and find VIPRE AntiVirus or VIPRE Internet Security work best with Steam and Windows 7 Professional.

Norton is pretty bad and often gets hacked or bypassed, I'd never recommend it.
for a time-limited period, sharewareonsale website has 1-year subscription to avg 2015 internet security...
(essentially an extended 1 year trial version of avg 2015 according to the description)
The most effective antivirus is to know what not to do online. Before Circuit City went under, we had computers with each of them come in for virus removal. I think AVG was the most common one with viruses, though.

I totally agree

Because phishing email attacks are thwarted if you don't ever read your email.

Seriously guys, browsing habits form a very small part of online security, even on trusted sites, advertising has been known to present vulnerabilities, just as one example.

best AV is your brain :wasted:
Of all three, Norton Internet Security in recent years has been the least invasive, and the least resource hungry AV, and there's a quiet game mode that can be turned for up to 24 hours..... They used to be one of the worst...times have changed.

Of the 25 I tested VIPRE and GFI (servers) had the least system impact in CPU usage and used memory.

I'm a total VIPRE convert now.

It also scans very quickly.
I worked tech support at a POS company and the credit card software on the office server computer, when any site decided to install McAfee on the computer - it would quarntine files for the credit card software and break it.

No other anti-virus did this. Norton, MSE, Kaspersky worked well. McAfee just caused overall general problems.

There's nothing wrong with Norton (people still say it's a resource hog, but most of that's been corrected since it was a real problem years ago) or Kaspersky if you want to go that route.

Then perhaps you can explain why I have zero viruses with zero antivirus over the last 5 years.

As for phishing and online ads, that falls under "what not to do online".

Edit: Thanks, rotNdude, for combining the posts. The only reason I left them separate was because there was such a large time gap between them.

You don't get pishing mails, if you are at a good provider... unless, you register at some untrustworthy sites...

at a child i got many phishing mails, because i didn't really knew what i did.
But today, i definitely know, wether it is worth on registering at some sites or not and what to click and what not...
macaffee and norton are the mac of computer brands mosty for show and are a resource hog. Kapersky is the better choice although I would personally vouch for Nod 32 and all forms of it. Smart security sometimes creates issues with firewall so pay a little attention to the settings besides that its great.

Yea none of the above crap. Windows already has MSE (Defender)
Besides that you should have these too:
- ESET Online AV Scan (yes it can remove infections too)
- Malwarebytes; Anti-Malware, Anti-Rootkit, and Anti-Exploit
I would add hitman pro to this list. But thats for pretty severe embedded trojans that will not go away.
Don't ever get McAfee! I am an ex-Geek Squad employee and mcafee cause so many problems. If you spend money for the expensive Norton subscriptions, those are okay.

We always used/recommended Webroot/Trend Micro/Kaspersky, Windows users liked webroot better and Mac users like Kaspersky better.

As an ex-geek squad employee myself i just wanted to ask how did you deal with your employers? I worked at bestbuy for 4 months and at the time I was the more popular staff members with the consumers but I also didn't force them to pay additional 200 for diagnosis and extraction of data, which seems to be step 1 for any situation and they frown if you don't do it. Eventually I had to grab my superviser by the neck and put the fear of god into him before I quit had to make him realize there all sorts of geeks in the world and not all of them are push overs especially the ones that are also social and physical. I also stole most of their business as most consumers would have my contact info to get in touch directly.
