Steering wheel control for auto racing games?
I play alot of car racing games and as I am looking for the optimal experience I am thinking of getting a racing wheel. Can someone recommend to me what wheel I should get for games like Asseto Corsa or Project cars?

Do they all cost $300 -$500 dollars or isn't there some middle ground between them and a controller ??

The Logitech G27 seems like it is pretty much "the standard" however I know that I do not like foot pedals so is there anything available with out them?

The forums for those games themselves do not seem like any help as there is just technical information on how to set up an existing controller.

Foot Pedals go with a Wheel; otherwise why would u bother looking at those?

Do you control gas/brake in your vehicle with your hands, NO.

Ever seen inside a formula 1 car? Those switches on the steering wheel are for gear and brake settings. Plus I do not drive my car with a dual shock controller either.

Problem is it just won't sense on a game controller type device.
The pedals have an axis; if you re-map gas or brake to a "button" then you won't have an axis zone; u'd have an on/off toggle; and that's just not going to be any good for driving/racing. Yea you have steering wheel pedals; those are for shifting if u don't have (or want to use) a stick. As very few games actually support a full featured Clutch + Shifter

Well I have used driving wheels that way in the past and I prefered it. Gears on the left wheel switch brake on the right wheel switch. Buttons for fuel.

I am looking for a middle ground between controler and wheel. I think when you say axis you are refering to a pressure senstivity? I understand what you mean though.

Plus I did not say I absolutely had to have a pedal free experience either.

gas/brake with buttons? U must be joking.

U need the range of axis; that is why people just spin-out using a Keyboard *sigh*

If you want a cheaper wheel; get an Xbox360 Wheel

Yea avoid Playstation stuff for PC.
Xbox360 or One stuff; not an issue.

But yea look around, like _|_ said above.
Even if it is a little older; alot of the older Logitech and ThrustMaster stuff are still really good; cause of their high-end build quality. A majority of stuff like this from those two brands were made well, made to last.

G27 is considerably cheaper right now, just go with that. Pedals and shifter are easily moddable.

Hi there, not sure if it helps but when it comes down to pedal free alternatives, you could use some PSX controllers like the ultraracer. I have it hooked up to my PC via an adapter and it works great. Plus it is not cumbersome or anything and you can easily put it away as soon as you are finished using it. You could also try the HKS racing controlleer or the SRW S1 (I have it but I do not like it and do not recommend it though)

I started this thread because I wnated to know ' are wheels really all that expensive?' . As I was suprised on my first shopping experience. My additional issue was that I remembered having a wheel with pedals for the Dreamcast and not really liking the feel of the pedals at all.

Fast forward : I bought a LogitechG920 for $400 a few months ago and (as a a racing fan) wondered how I got along with out it. It is really well built.

It is a really good point however about pressure sensitivity in applying the gas and brake. Further the force feed back( the twitch) is integral to the experience and I have set some of my best lap times ever with the wheel simply because that is how it was designed and meant to be played.

I still have a hand held controler but there is no comparrison for racing games.
