4x4GB vs 2x8GB
I plan to upgrade to 16GB of RAM, and was wondering whether going for 4x4GB sticks vs 2x8GB sticks would make any noticeable difference.

Unless u have LGA-2011 w/ Quad Channel support; best bet is 2x8GB
But u need to check your Motherboard Manual / Specs to ensure it supports RAM that high per DIMM, some older boards will have limits per DIMM slot, such as 2 or 4 GB max per slot.

Also some Motherboards might not be able to run above a certain RAM Frequency when all DIMMs are populated. Your Motherboard Manual should have all these details covered.

2x8GB is less load on the memory controller than 4x4GB.

Yeah, I think you're right. I was reading up a lot and there's no much noticeable difference between 2x8 and 4x4, so I'll go with 4x4 for the looks.

Thanks for your help Mozendo, you're the best! If only there was some kind of rep system on here, you deserve mine!

4x4 Costs more and you'll be maxing out a 4-Dimm board.
2x8GB is cheaper and yes, less stress on the memory controller.

Sets of 4 are more for when u going to max out a dual-channel board with 32GB of RAM
Or for boards where that is better suited, like an LGA-2011 setup, which uses Quad-Channel and thus 4x DIMM minimum is best on that type of setup.

4x4 does not cost more they're the same price.
Saying don't get 4x4 because it stresses out the memory controller more is like saying don't get a higher end GPU because those tend to put more stress on the PSU

Thank you :)
Do you have a color scheme in mind? Make sure the ram matches! :)

Red and black! This is what my board will look like[cdn.eteknix.com] with 4x4GB. Isn't it great? ^^

Nice one. That one is still one of my choices. So many motherboards to choose from :( and nerxt week there will be a new launch of processors.

No, modern GPUs don't use 500+ W like everyone seems to think.
You should read more about memory before commenting.

The analogy is valid despite your biased views.
Higher TDP GPUs stresses the PSU just like 4x4GB stresses the memory controller. I suggest that you enlighten yourself with PC building knowledge before making asinine assumptions ( Don't know what you brought up 500+ watt specifically).

Anyways it seems the comment is pointless because the OP already found his answer, :)
