How important is mechanical keyboard?

I have been using cheap membrane keyboards whole my life. Actually the one I'm writing on right now has been used in my house since 1999 and it's still working perfectly (Dell SK-8125). I have never had any problem with it, although I never learned to touch type so I'm probably not "picky" about keyboards.

I live in Bosnia, everything here is double the price that ie United States, but recently I've seen Steelseries 6Gv2 in a shop near me. So i'm interested how much of a difference does mechanical make? I want to hear what you people thnk, is it worth the investment?

Also, my keyboard has US layout, I got so accustomed to it over time that I can't use Bosnian layout, so I'm open to suggestions for buying a keyboard online.

:) i'm still using a cheap 3-9$ (equivalent) keyboards, made in china.
(some lasts more than 6 months, others lasts more than 2 years)

i think it all boils down to your preference.
if the shop is near you, visit it and ask if you could try typing in it.
(some shops allow customers to try their demo models; others don't)

Not very important unless you type a lot. I find I prefer it to membrane keyboards while typing. But if you type sparingly a cheap keyboard is fine for anything.

it you have a keyboard you had a long time and gives you no problem and like it, why get a new one, lot of the newer keyboard are made cheaper and causes more problem, i have old keyboard i like using i cant use the keyboard on a newer system with usb and ps2

Mechanical keyboards definitely are more comfortable to use, but they're just a luxury.
A regular keyboard will do just fine but, if you do want a mechanical keyboard, I suggest getting a Cherry-MX switch sampler to see if you like using a particular switch type before buying.

Consider how regularly you are using that mouse and keyboard, how many years of daily abuse, compared to how much they actually costed.

I personally would suggest getting a good one. Not necessary on the far feature filled / marketing gilmick side, but something high in quality, built for comfort and quality.

Lets just say - After a mechanical keyboard, I wouldn't go back to a standard one. Faster response, more comfortable, and a feeling of feedback to the touch, etc. There's a learning curve to the new feeling, but you become attached and then wondered how you survived without.

As for the Cherry MX keys, there's a range and it comes down to your personal taste.

This is the same deal with a SSD (Solid State Drive) - it's entirely optional, you don't actually need it, but when you come to using it... you wonder why it took you that long to get it. Normal HDD suddenly appear slow and old in comparison (you even get fustrated just going back to one).
