Trouble recording with Fifine mic

About a month ago I purchased a Fifine microphone for ~$35. When I tested it on Audacity, it didn’t record unless I was turning the volume button the entire time I spoke. Once I stopped, so did the mic.

The microphone’s center is indented on both sides—I don’t know if that’s a manufacture issue or just what it looks like. I keep it outside of a casing so dust may have gotten into it, but as it CAN record and was a recent purchase, I don’t feel that’s it. Any idea what’s happening and how I can get it to record normally?
