Upgrade suggestions: i5 650
Hello everyone I currently have a i5 650 dual core cpu that I need to upgrade, what should I get? I'm not really sure, I don't have a great amount of money to spend so CPU+MOBO should be around 400 euro's, any suggestions?

the i5 650 is what I have. Ifwe have the same set up then you have an intel 1155 socket with an h57 chipset so your options are somewhat limited. Replacing the mobo and cpu for that kind of money is likely out of the question. So I would say just look for an i7 that will fit an 1155 mobo socket. I have seen some i7 that are clocked around 3.9ghz. Thats probaly top end for that kind of money depending... Perhaps an i7 extreme might be within your budget. Amazonandnewegg are good places to search for hardware. However I d say just leave the mother board alone because it will just complicate and add unesseary expenses to the whole thing. fortuna
If you do mostly gaming, go with the i5-3570K (~€200) for Socket 1155. Best bang per buck. If multi-threading would be helpful, then go with the i7-3770K (€285). These also sell quite well on the second-hand market, so when you come to sell it you'll get some of your money back. Intel actually helps in this regard by keeping their prices stable and not offering discounts. Bad for buyers, but good for sellers of older components.
the i5 650 is actually a socket 1156 so I need a new mobo too :/

I'm so sorry, I read the post from avalenti001 and took his word that it was a Socket 1155. That has taught me a lesson to do my own research in future...

But yeah, sadly I couldn't find more than one or two CPU's for the 1156 platform, so may be it's a good time for a proper refresh. Yeah, I know, never a good time to find money for a major PC refresh/upgrade...

Then again, you only need a CPU and motherboard upgrade. Okay, let's start with what type/speed RAM have you got and graphics card? That'll give people an idea of what to look for in your price range.

We need PC specs...

4gb dual channel ram 1333mhz

gt545 2gb (upgrade later)

1tb HDD

400 watt psu

cpu is dying and bios splash screen takes 1 min to load (1 week ago it was 10 sec, yes did try to reset bios) so thats what im going to upgrade first.

was looking at the fx 8320 and the i5 4670k, is the price difference (90 euro's) worth it?
Well, in game AMD is getting really better since the new consoles are out so it's har to tell. IF you really want the PC just foor gaming I'd say you're better off with an FX and more money in the GPU instead of an Intel CPU and not as good a GPU ;)

Is the single-core performance of amd really that bad, I know it has a 25% worse IPC then intel, will I have issues playing old single core games like CSS on large surf maps and such?
I have an AMD FX 6300 myself and so far it is doing very well. i haven't really run into any games that suffer from it yet

Have you tried playing CS source on a map like surf_buck-fever?
BTW they likely make an 1156 i7. But I guess you are saying your mother board is fried too...sux. Even still that PSU would probaly need an upgrade to accomodate, cheap enough.you might just consider a whole new rig for 400 euros or so and re use the gpu/ram/monitor for now.

Yea thats probaly true.... Can anyone suggest some parts, cpu, mobo, psu and case? (my case is really crappy so I probaly should replace it :P)
NZXT H440 looks super nice
an i-5 4690 cus i-5 is more than enough since u run one already and i-7s are kinda pointless unless u actually need it (u also should make sure the new one supports ur ram)
I havn't looked at the gtx800 series yet or the new radeon but u might wanna wait for those cus all the old ones will drop in price
just don't skimp on the motherboard and u should be fine, they're more useful than u might think
and make sure ur powers supply is silver 80X rated

Do you know any full ATX boards that support OC'ing for 4690K that are under 150 bucks?

Look for a Z97 chipset motherboard. Most will have the 'Z97' in the model name. Don't go for the H97, yes, it's cheaper, because it doesn't support overclocking. The Z97 chipset supports all the latest features of the 4690 CPU and gives a nice speed hike over the Z87.
there are a few z97 boards under $100

if you want sli, it will be around $110-120
