not really, try to get a quad-core if you can, even if it has to be AMD.

source only needs 2 cores

c2d has the same core performance of amd fx cpus

if your gpu is good itll play fine
E8400 isn't bad. I had the E8600 for the longest time and it was a good cpu.

What motherboard do you currently have? I would go with the highest processor that your motherboard will support. If your motherboard supports it, i would get one of the core 2 quad processors or at least the E8600.

Yeah, normally all lga 775 mobos support pentium D all the way to core 2 extreme.

look up the boards cpu compatability
not all 775 boards will take all 775 cpus

looks like a no

That CPU will be perfectly fine for him to play CS GO. Assuming his previous topics he don't want a new mobo and for the socket 775 the E8400 is still a huge step forward.
For a newer CPU - even if some cheaper AMD, he will also need a new MB and RAM sticks.
Of course even the cheapest new PC would be a noticable performance increase, but it would be better for him to save up more and buy at least a middle range PC.
