XBox 360 Controller Line of Sight or Extension
Hello All.

I have set up that has my PC removed from my TV. I want to be able to play some games on the TV with my XBox 360 for PC controler. The current one I have is wired, though if it would would I would switch to the Wireless Version.

The TV is 20' exactly from my PC, and Off-Set around 2-1/2' from that. I have the TV wired to the pc via a 25' HDMI Cable. So if using a Wireless Controller there would be no direct line of site, and given that distance, the Wired Controller does not reach.

My assumtions to make this work are either:

-Get a USB to USB extension cord so that the Wired Controller will reach the couch
-USB Extension from PC to a Powered USB Hub by the TV and then plug Wired Controller in to Powered USB Hub
-Get a Wireless Controller and Hope tha the connection works with out line of sight
+If it does not work without direct line of sight, then possibly a USB to USB connecton so that that wireless sensor can be brought closer to the wireless controll on the couch.

Please let me know if anyone has a similar issue that they have fixed and any suggestions for me to get this work.

I do have a small diagram for visual represention but cant upload here (or dont know how to). You can direct message me for that if interested.

Thanks!

you can put about a 10ft usb extension on a wired 360 controller

wireless controllers can go over 30ft
the usb 360 reciever has about a 10ft cable on it also
they are rf wireless at around 2.4ghz (through walls ect.. not line of sight)

ms branded 360 recievers are hard to find, but they always work
non ms branded recievers will almost always issues

Microsoft JR9-00011 Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows (sometimes on sale for $35-40)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823109243
includes a ms 360 reciever
Thanks for the feed back. I will try that out. I was thinking for also just running a long USB extension to a Powered USB dock so that I can use the Wired Controller as well. I will see which would work best.

I have seen hit and miss reviews on the Wireless XBox Controllers.

ms controllers are fine
off brand ones will work

but the main thing is the reciever
if you get an off brand reciever it will not always work
the ms ones always work
Great. So then the 20+ feet and offset angle should not be a problem for an official XBox 360 fof PC Controller then?

20ft extension will be too much, but a 10ft ext should be fine along with the 6-8ft controller wire
So then the only real option would be a wireless controller. Cause it is 20 + feet from my PC to my TV.

Even though the USB is a digital cord the extrat 10' or so distort it or what?

it has to do with the length of the cable

there are usb repeater cables, which will amplify the signal again

12m is about 40ft

may add a litle lag to the controller, due to the signal being converted a few times

U shouldn't need any "line of sight" with the USB Wireless 360 Receiver; as it uses 2.4Ghz Wireless signal.

I've ran some tests with it (one official MS one and one generic rebrand from China) and the MS ones works flawlessly; and with a single receiver plugged in u can connect up to 4 wireless 360 controllers to it and have them all work at same time, just like on an actual 360 Console.

Stay away from the rebrand/offbranded wireless receivers; they are complete junk and what usually occurs is it dropped/resetting it's wireless signal, making use of controllers pointless, as the game will keep pausing, saying "please reconnect your controller, etc" and not all games do that, but a game like "Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition" does do this. Course I'd prefer it to do that then say other games like "Watch_Dogs" where if the controller losses connection, it never says anything as it would just expect u to continue playing with KB+MS.

As far as range goes, 15-30 feet (even through walls) was of no issue with the official receiver. I had MK running; and went to the other end of my home; about 30 feet total since the receiver was about 5-6ft from the other wall; and I was still able to control my character/game just fine, and played like this for test purposes for about 5 mins on 2x 360 Wireless controllers, no problems.

As for USB extenstion cables for Wired controllers, u have to be careful here, even with a powered hub. As extended USB with too long of a cable can result in an iffy connection. I do like the idea of a powered hub though, but given the cable length of wired controller already, I would say that 10-15ft extension max cable should be used. Due to if u were to have the total length of USB cable reach beyond 25-30ft or so, then u will most likely have issues with the hardware dropping in/out or delays in button presses and such.
Thanks for the info. So the Wireless XBox 360 (Offical MS) sounds like that best option. I will pick one up and give it a try.

Thanks, again.
Do u already have the "360 Wireless USB Receiver" ?
If not, let me know your home country and can link u to an official MS one.
No. I dont have the Wireless Controller or USB Receiver. I would assume that the XBox 360 Wireless Controller (Offical MS) Would come with the receiver, wouldn't it?

Home country is United States.
They are usually sold separately.

But there is a Wireless Controller + Receiver bundle.

Once u have the receiver, u can connect any "360 Wireless Controller" with the receiver; up to 4 controllers per receiver. If the controller works on a 360, then it should work through that wireless receiver. Also helpful if u already own a 360 Console with wireless controller(s). Then you can use your existing wireless controller(s) on your PC via that receiver. If you are familiar with 360 Console, on there it would allow you to assign a connected controller a # (1-4); on the PC Receiver there isn't exactly a way to do this, so if you wish to use more than 1 wireless controller and want them assigned a certain #, turn them on in the order u want them to be in.

If you or others need that receiver separately (for around $10-20), you can find them in stores like GameStop, or online, like Amazon. Just be sure it's a Microsoft one, and not HDE or some generic junk.
