GT740m with a i5 4200M getting poor FPS around the 18/25fps :(
Greetings!

I've been having some really strange performance issues with my MSI GP70.

I noticed it when I wanted to play Euro Truck Simulator 2 on my laptop. A really wierd issue prevents me from getting more then 18fps on Ultra at 1080p. You may say ''Maybe you can't run it'' well I've played Battlefield 4 smoothly on high sometime ago.

So I went ahead and launced Sniper Elite V2 and even that game had the performance issues. It won't go above 25fps maxed out while my 9800GTX+ 512mb (yeah lol) runs the game smoothly at 40fps on high.

I did some research and it's clear my GT740m is fast enough to play these games.

So I checked if it wasn't running on the HD Graphics and it didn't. It was always running on the Nvidia card.

I'm kind of lost right now on to why this is happening. I updated the drivers and searched around on the web but shoulnd't find a fix for it.

(Laptop specs):
CPU: i5 4200M
GPU: Nvidia GT740m 2GB
RAM: 8GB DDR3
OS: Windows 8.1 64bit
HDD: 1TB 5400rpm SSHD

Model: MSI Gaming Series GP70 2OD-043NL

I hope someone can help me out. Because I always used my laptop for the games my desktop PC can't run.

Looks much smoother then what I'm getting with ETS2 and Sniper Elite V2. These 2 games aren't even demanding and my desktop GPU from 2009 can run Sniper Elite V2 smooth and still good looking. There is something wrong with my laptop.
What drivers r u using?
Most laptops will come with poor OEM drivers; remove them and update to the latest official ones; for things like Intel Chipset INF, Intel HD 4000 series, NVIDIA GeForce Mobile 700M series.

Once you've done this; then go into NVIDIA CP > Manage 3D Settings and set the NVIDIA GPU as the default.

The Nvidia GPU is set as the default one. I also have the latest drivers.
your specs are good, dont worry about that.Open task manager and see if any unusual processes keep your cpu busy.If not, check the temperatures of cpu and gpu while playing, high temperatures cause extreme lag.My laptop is 3yold and i havent cleaned it even once since i bought it,thats why my cpu hits temperatures of 96 degrees celcius and this makes any game laggy.I bought recently a laptop cooling pad and my lag is gone along with the high temperatures.
The tempratures are fine. I even installed the OEM drivers but still I'm getting poor FPS.

The very first post answered your question.

You must understand, a card with the GT label is not designed for gaming. It's the GTX line of cards that are meant for gaming. You have a weak GPU.

If you read the article you were linked to, you would see that your card manages playable frames only at resolutions below 1080p, and only at a game's low to medium detail settings.

Lower your resolution, lower your detail settings and you will achieve a fluid framerate.
one other thing that I figured out on my GT540M that boosted the performance noticably is to switch it to maximum performance.

go to the nvidia control panel, go to the game you play in the profile settings then scroll down to power management and switch it from adaptive to maximum performance.
