While u could CF with say a 7870, it's pointless because it will only run as fast as the slowest installed GPU.
Plus its hard to even find 7000 series GPUs anymore. I would just replace it with an R9 series Radeon GPU that fits your budget, plus then u can avoid CF issues with games that don't get along with that.
R9 270X would be a decent enough choice; depending on the rest of your specs and Power Supply. And also what resolution and quality settings u expect to run at. And given most 7850 are 1GB VRAM; it kinda makes CF'ing w/ an R7 or R9 pointless too. As the 7850 will hold u back quite a bit.
R7's are more mid-range; don't bother.
Specs:
i5-4670k 4.4 GHz
Gigabyte z87x-hd3 Mobo
Asus HD 7850 2GB
Corsair Vengeance 8GB
Rosewill Green 630W PSU
I just realized that I probably would need a better PSU.
I'm not planning on getting a 2nd GPU anytime soon as a single 7850 is enough for me at 1280x1024 (Yes I know, who uses that resolution anymore?) It's just a thought of the future, I am always planning ahead. My first prioty is ditching my old dual monitors and see how it goes from there.
Plus gaming @ 1280x1024 is more than enough for a single 7850 2GB to handle. As in most games, it should even handle 1080p quite well, depending on the game.
So I'd first get a better monitor; then see how well your current GPU does with that. If u see huge dips in performance with a new hi-res (like 1080p) monitor, then upgrade your GPU as needed. Plus most games for while now have been designed to look as they should when played under widescreen res. So u are missing half the game ;)
