overheating issues
had the computer for a year now; build by myself

the problem is. the cpu itself becomes extremely hot, the cpu fan becomes extremely hot and so does the motherboard heat sinks.

the CPU goes up to 90c and the computer shuts down.

specs;

GTX 770 GPU
AMD 8350 CPU
Generic RAM 8GB
ASUS motherboard M5A97 R2.0
PSU mod xtreme pro 600w
Generic cpu fan
Aerocool Strike-X GT PC CASE

I can't see why the issue could be the mobo or cpu. both have not been touched apart from cleaning dust off, which i've been doing regullar.

could it be the pc case not being cool enough for the mainboard?

i have 3 generic psu case fans 120mm, also.

overheats when I use handbreak. also overheated when playing DAYZ and RUST.

From the case he says he has it appears to have decent airflow, atleast 5 120mm fans on his case.
Messaggio originale di UberFiend:
Disable AMD Cool & Quiet in BIOS to get the CPU fan speed up.

A Coolermaster Hyper212 is an excellent cheap investment too.

Done both. hopefully when the second option arives. i'll be sorted!

If you disable Cool'n'Quiet the processor won't underclock itself and it'll run hotter when idle. It's a total waste of energy, money and life of the CPU and other components.

Since you have an ASUS motherboard, you can actually control the cooler rpm in bios. Head into the monitor section and look for q-fan. Adjust settings so that it ramps up much more aggressively until you get your new cooler, or disable it so the cooler runs at full throttle at all times.

thanks. i'll give it a try

No it will be running cooler at idle because the fans will be running faster. Crucially it will also be cooler under load because the fans will be running faster.

You're confused mate. It's ok.

So what advice should I follow?
When the processor is idle it's not going to run hotter, no matter what the clock speed is, it's IDLE!

It will be cooler with Cool & Quiet (which is just an energy-saving-greeny-marketing "feature") because the cpu & case fans will run faster all the time & the cpu will remain cooler than it would with the "feature" on.

The "feature" is wonderful for mums & dads drafting their excel pie-charts & word docs for work or shopping online for baby strollers, but not for hours-on-end of 3D gaming. And that's why gamers fiddle & tweak their machines.

Those stock CPU coolers are good for two things: For [censored] and [censored]
The Hyper212 is a great choice, for a relatively cheap price it can effectively cool basically any CPU on the market.
Though if you have some money at your hand you can go a bit higher and get something from Noctua. Their performance is tremendous, but so is their size.
Also some thermal paste are better as others, you can get some additional 2-3 grades with a better one.
I want to make it aware that, my computer only shuts down after overheating when using handbrake.

so far, i havent tested any other programs that use all of my 8 cores. my best guess is that when the cpu uses 8 cores, the cpu cooler can't cool it enough, in turn heating the motherboard up too.

i'm hoping this water cooler will help the problem, even if a little bit. if the problem still exists, as in still shutting down. i'll have to buy better quality fans. the ones I have on my case were 5 pounds each.
here's a tip: turn the fan up so it's cooling as much as the cooling fan is able to cool which is the whole point of a cooling fan, by disabling amd cool & quiet in bios.

It'll take 2 minutes, if you don't like it, put it back on Auto again, another 2 minutes.

And a Hyper212 is as good as water for half the price & none of the potential disaster.

I've had cool & quite switched off to no avail.
If you applied the thermal paste wrong, this can be the problem.
installed water cooling, applied new fans for intake and exhuast. cpu still overheats, mother board also. what could be the problem? i have installed enough hardware too keep it ice cold and it still goes insane.
I have tried everything you guys suggested and my cpu still overheats. the only option i havent tried is buying a new cpu fan. but why? the cpu fan is adaquit for what it needs to do. my friend has same specs as me, he doesn't have overheating provlems
At This point it seems like a defective part. I'm not saying this is your problem, but the cpu heatsink + fan you showed looked like a 80mm, which is tiny for your cpu. Again, not trying to imply that's your problem, but it is undersized. I have no idea what could still be causing your overheating, but like I said, at this point seems like a defective part.
