Adware on Steam Store and Community tabs. Please Help!
A few days ago i started to get adware on my steam store and community. The ads consist of buttons that say "Download" and "Play" and another one that says a flash player must be installed to continue. Also ads appear under titles of games and forum sections. Words on the Pages are also turned into links to ad sites. I've looked up how to fix this on the internets, and the only solution that i could find was to format my hard drive. I don't get ads on google chrome or anywhere else, just steam, so formatting would be a bit overkill. Someone please help!

PS- I have scanned with windows defender and malwarebytes but those dont fix this problem.

looks like you got some adware or malware on the pc

download mbam
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/
reboot in safe mode
install and run it, update, and do the full scan
let it finish, and fix all problems, then reboot to normal mode and repeat

ill try this. ill get back to you on this

I downloaded it and ran the threat scan and removed 2 non-malware files. This didn't fix this problem at all. I didn't run it in safe mode because I'm on windows 8 and idk how to do that. Is this an important part or does it even matter?

what "free" software did you install recently?

Yes, running it in safe mode is the most important part. Otherwise the malware can simply block the antivirus from scanning.
how would i start windows 8 in safe mode?
alright, i ran malwarebytes on safe mode and removed the harmful stuff that it found, then i restarted in normal mode and now im going to run it again
the amount of ads that pop up has decreased a tiny bit, but for the most part they're still everywhere. any other ideas?
Delete steam and reinstall, I don't know at this point because you must have installed some "free" software which had something which replaces/feeds adverts into any browser you have.

Do you keep your system always up to date on patches? adobe flash/reader etc? Else this can't really happen without you installing some freeware which came with some toolbar like adware.

Honestly if you didn't install anything you should just consider your system compromised, reinstall windows...format c: after backup, we can't know what happened.

I'll uninstall and reinstall steam. I keep my system up to date. The ads aren't from adobe flash player or reader, they're for the "FLV Player 3.4."
I uninstalled then reinstalled... they're still there...

Format your PC.
