There might be a software solution that I am unaware of in Android settings but I do not believe there is a way to do this via the Android device. There might if you were willing to code a solution yourself. I can confirm on Desktop 'distro's'/versions of Linux, the headphones do work.
I have managed to get the headphones to work however using the following methods:
1) Using a PC as an audio pass through (very inconvenient) but as with all audio devices, it will always work for passthrough audio. Connect a 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male from your phone to the Line In Audio port (this port might not be available on all computers - mostly only available on a Desktop motherboard's audio ports; if you WANT one, you will have to use some kind of usb device to provide the audio ports). And then connect your headphones to your headphone port on the computer and through Audio Settings allow the OS to listen to your Line In audio and output to the headphone port (how will depend on OS).
2) This is by far the most convenient but will require a simple 3.5mm extension cable (can be any length). The extension cable will have to be one with only 2 black lines on the 3.5mm audio port as opposed to 3. The 2 black lines will isolate the microphone from the headphones automatically so there will be no confusion. Could probably have just said this as opposed to one long post.
Using an extension cable would work undoubtably, though I'm curious if it's isolated to just Android, has anyone tested this on an iOS device?
It's definitely an Android thing. I ordered a second extension cable from Amazon because the last one broke. This one doesn't work and it has the 3 black rings (not lines) meaning that it's probably definitely because the Android device cannot distinguish between the mic and the headphone. Though I don't quite understand why the iPhone does work. More interestingly, I got a 3.5mm male to male extension cable and connected one end to the hyperx cloud 2 mic port. Because of the unique shape of the port, I had to squeeze it in to make a connection (this is the only 3.5mm cable which I can do this with because the end is rubber meaning it can be squeezed - most 3.5mm cables are metal or plastic. Anyways, once a connection was made, the hyperx cloud 2 was able to play music through the headphones - once it figured out where the headphones are at). A shame. I'll have to return this extension cable back to Amazon now.
For reference, the 3.5mm extension cable that worked was the 10 meter one, it has 2 rings on each 3.5mm cable:

The one I ordered which doesn't work:

The next ones I'll order:

They should work, but if I am incorrect and there is something else affecting the connection, it might not work.
I'm hoping it has not got to do with something related to the shape of the gold plated plug.
Kudos for all the information!
Shame the headphones didn't work from the beginning though.
However, it doesn't explain why the headset will only with with the mic plugged in. It definitely seems like a 'complete circuit' issue rather than it being wired differently on the TRSS connection.
It's a shame these headphones cannot be used without a mic on certain phones as they'd make a great addition. Though I can't fault Kingston as they don't market the headphones as "Great for use with Android and Apple phones!".
Personally i found using the mic and then removing it to be an easier solution, if a tad annoying.
