PC Sound very loud even when on low volume.
Right now my PC sound is far too loud even when on low volume. The sound is loud at 10 volume, when 50 volume should be medium and 10 quiet.

Does anyone know the cause of this? It's the same on my desktop. Very low volume, but very loud sound, maxing out volume would blow out the speakers/headphones. Have all the latest audio drivers installed.

Please do not give an answer saying 'lower chrome volume' or something, reducing application volumes in the mixer doesn't fix this. The base volume for everything is still way too loud.

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 17r 7720 with dell audio, Windows 7 64bit.

Thank you.

I was able to resolve this by reverting back to a previous driver. Hope that helps someone.

If you have a SoundBlaster chip on your motherboard, or card even, check if you have the software to go along with it. I have SoundBlaster Recon 3Di on my mobo, and the Sound Blaster Pro Studio software. Within this software is an option under SBX Pro Studio called Smart Volume. Turn it off and then you should be good. Just had to find this again because it was turned on again. Hope it helps!

Sadly that isn't possible with a headset that doesn't feature volume controls. Here's an example of my setup.
HyperX Cloud Core headset plugged into rear-in 3.5mm port on the motherboard. Gigabyte Mobo featuring Creative hardware and software. The software is linked up with Windows so any volume change there, automatically changes Windows volume as well.
The issue stands that the headset isn't recognized by Windows as a headset, but set up as a speaker. I think it's therefore pushing out audio volume at a higher volume based on being set as a speaker.

I may have found a fix as I had similar issue in my workplace with earbuds plugged into the rear-in. Provided my home PC has the same option, going to the properties of the sound device, go to levels, and see if you have a scrollbar to find "Front". Mine at work was set to 100!!!! I hope I have it at home and I figured this may have been why, but I didn't think I had a scrollbar at home. So we'll see.

At home I tested this but found the different volume settings for Levels was already low/equal across the board. I did find that the port I was plugged into was only stereo. I plugged into another port for Front Speakers/headphones and the volume was significantly lower and I was able to fix it up to be comfortable. No more crazy loud volume.

So TL:DR - Check the port, as it may change the volume you're receiving. Refer to your owners manual as well, it likely will help.

I just recently came across this problem after installing Win7 on a machine and finding 1/100 volume killed my ears.

- To fix this, I went to Control Panel -> Sound.
- Find the device your speakers/headphones/earphones are connected to and open Properties.
- Go to the Enhancements tab and in the box in the middle of the tab, find "Loudness Equalization" and uncheck it. Press Ok.

Problem solved!

I'm having this problem, but it's even worse in my case. Everything I record is really quiet when to me it's normal volume. As a result, my microphone overpowers everything else. Not only that, but simply turning up the volume in post editing makes the audio quality degrade to ♥♥♥♥ (then again that could be the recording software itself, but I have no idea.) My volume right now is at 27. Anything louder than that is too loud, and even then, I usually have to lower my game volume.

Hello, I've been having the same problem for a few months now, while coming back to this thread a 14th time. I might have found a solution that works for me, hope it works for other people. This solution might be conditional to the hardware you have in you PC.

- In playback devices I selected the one I'm having trouble with -> Properties -> Spatial sound tab. I had no spatial sound format selected, I selected " Windows Sonic for Headphones". Now my sound is back to amazing.

Hope it helps.

Oh my, after months upon months suffering from this problem, I thought that there wouldn't be any solution to this audio issue and I was almost thinking that I would have to suck it up and deal with it. But this actually works!!

Trust me, these audio issues have been affecting my recording and I nearly quit editing at one point. You sir (or ma'am), are amazing. Thank you so much! :)

Okay, so on second thought, I can't give too much praise. Hehe. ;3

Basically, this method was able to solve one of my issues, which was to make the laptop volume more appropriate. However, one of my other problems still stems, which is the desktop audio.

As someone mentioned before, when I listen to music or play games on my laptop, the audio works fine and I can hear everything. However, when I try to record it with a game recording software such as Fraps or even OBS, the volume is much, MUCH lower and I can barely hear ANYTHING. Oddly enough, the microphone works fine...

As of right now, I have increased the Desktop Audio by 20.0 decibels on the OBS recorder, but I don't think Fraps has that option of increasing the db by that much... so yeah this solution is only temporary and won't work with other softwares.

Is there a way I can fix this audio issue with recording softwares?

If you are using windows 10, go into the troubleshooting section from the control panel. Troubleshoot the audio. When it takes you in to the properties for the speaker. Uncheck the "allow programs to take exclusive control of audio". Then go through and set the audio levels to what the audio level sounds like to you. Finish the troubleshooter, then restart the computer. This fixed the issue on my computer.

I believe this issue was caused by Fallout: New Vegas or TES Oblivion.
THANK U SO MUCH!!! MY HERO! xd

same problem here, had started when I upgraded tho i'm not sure if it was a certain part or driver as I changed many parts at once. I'll list all the changes that started the audio problems. from fx cpu to a ryzen7 1800x, from 750ti gpu to gtx 1070, from gigabyte mobo to asrock. have no idea how frustrating it is to need to keep windows volume at 10 or so and still have to turn down app volumes. people saying adjust volume no just stop you don't know the problem at all. if windows master volume breaks 20-30 it is not just the sound level it is the quality, it becomes distorted sounds like crap and deafening loud blowing speakers. if anyone has found a fix please post or message?
