Could just be how the USB port & plug align. After about a year my mothers laptop was like that, USB 2.0 on the left was having some issues, but worked fine for her USB optical drive. So she just ended up having to plug in her mouse and headset on the right USB 3.0 ports. For some reason the mouse wouldn't align properly with the left port, and was just a somewhat bad connection. But other stuff works on it fine.
If you haven't already, ensure the speakers are switching what they're sending audio to when you plug in the headphones. You may also want to test the headphones on another computer to see if they're still working should you not be able to get audio to come out of them.
I just now looked all over the internet to find a solution, but no success. :( My G35 is also not detected in the Sound, video and game controllers in my Device Manager, even when plugged in.
Maybe uninstall and re-install the G35 software.
uninstall and re-install the G35 software.

Next time u scan with anti-virus/anti-malware; ensure of what it removes. Do not assume that what it want to remove is A-OK.
I've re-installed Windows a few times since I had my G35 headphones - I just used the CD that came with them to install the driver (or as linked above, you can go there).
Make sure all your other Hardware Drivers are up to date too since you have re-done your OS. And don't get those from Windows Updates.
I tried your reinstalling suggestion, but didn't seem to solve the problem.
Is your laptop still under warranty?
The USB port is actually partly working.
