I dunno. Why would you want to? It may hinder performance.
The OS doesn't like running on an external drive that much. Aside from that, performance takes a minor hit.

no, it needs an internal sata drive

It should always have internal SSD.
OS has to run off of that.
Don't use or buy external HDD types. Buy SSDs

And converting traffic from SATA/NVME to USB protocols and back will surely not be a bottleneck in terms of performance.
Xbox One X and PS5 at least have USB 3.1; so that helps a little.
Ideally you'd want to have Internal SSD (they use NVME SSD inside) and then if you really need more storage via USB; buy an external SSD that can support USB 3.1/3.2; not just 3.0

But HDDs are always going to be super slow in such a scenario no matter what.
x1x has a 2.5 in hdd stock, ssd is an easy swap

xbox series s/x all have nvme ssd soldered to the boards, no internal upgrade for those, only their proprietary stick thing 512g/1t/2t

(looks like and sticks out like the ps1/2 expansion cards)

There seems to be some confusion here. The Xbox One X is not the same as the Series X. The One X was the previous machine that came out in 2017 Microsoft's answer to the PS4 Pro. It has an internal 5,400 RPM mechanical drive.

The One X needs an internal hard drive.

The Xbox Series S and Series X have a removable M.2 drive, but it's not meant to be user replaceable though, in fact, they are keyed to the motherboard. A standard drive won't work. It's not soldered to the board. It's the PS5 that has the soldered NVME.

You can replace it with a 2.5 inch SATA SSD; just like you can on PS3, PS4, PS4-PRO.

However you have to create the OS USB Flash Drive media installer ahead of doing it. So you have a way to get the OS back onto the new drive.

PS5 NVME SSD is not soldered; it's user replaceable and very simple to do actually. The entire PS5 in-fact comes apart with ease. They are meant to be serviced by the user, as you will need to open them every so often to clean/blow out the dust build-up.

The main drive is soldered.

Perhaps you're thinking of the M.2 NVME expansion slot where you can add an additional drive?

The fact remains that the main drive is soldered and if it fails so does the entire console.
Still, not a big deal. IDK WTF you're all deep into all that info for, like it has any baring with the conversation at all.
ps5 has one soldered, and one socket, its very picky about what drives go in it

i thought the xs had soldered, but they are on m.2 style, but not standard m.2 sata/nvme drives
2230, and need to clone your orig ssd to the new one
