Not Really Good At This Stuff... How Good Is My Computer?
Here's the specs, is there anything that could be changed so I can play more CPU-demanding games?
Processor: AMD A4-6300 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (2 CPUs), (3.7GHz)
RAM: 8GB
I'm not entirely sure how to access other information, but I would like some help with upgrading a CPU and optimizing it for games so that I can play things like The Forest and Rust and whatnot.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Also, sorry for such a small amount of info, but any help about computers and their power would help!

Hi! Well your CPU sure ain't too great for games, especially if you use the APU instead of a graphics card. Most games ain't overly CPU-hungry, but definitely need a proper graphics card. The forest is such an example. Are you playing with a notebook or how comes that you even got an APU in your system? Do you have an additional graphics card, and does your PC case allow you to install one? Because that's what you'll need to enjoy games like The Forest.

Go for a Quad core will help better than a dual-core. Try these below

AMD A8-7600
AMD A10-7700K
AMD A10-7800
AMD A10-7850K

If you have the money for graphics card as well it well help.

amd cpus are not very good for gaming
the apus gpu is a good match for their cpu

but youll be much better off with an i3 or i5 than any amd cpu for those games

The graphics card I have is a Radeon HD 7480D GPU and that's it. I'm playing on a desktop, so I should be able to install a new graphics card. Is there any specific graphics card you recommend that is affordable and I will be able to use to play games on standard quality? Along with the quad core processor suggested above.

A lot of people are saying for gaming, the AMD FX 4350 Unlocked Quad Core Processor 4.2 4 FD4350FRHKBOX is pretty good.

AMD CPUs work just fine for gaming - i.e. they get the job done - though you are correct that, given the choice, Intel is the better option at this time. The lower cost of AMD CPUs makes them a good value proposition, however.

Lardish_Leader, you're running a Richland APU. The Kaveri (7000-series) APU may not be compatible with your motherboard. The best APU upgrade for you is probably the A-10 6800k.

Which graphics card you get is determined by two things: your $$$ budget, and how much power you power supply provides.

fx is as good as i3 which can be good enough for most games

but for games that need more cpu power the fx falls way behind i3/i5 at the same price range

So AMD cpus are not very good for gaming, but they are good enough for most games.

Got it... I think.

if its a budget build, i3 or pentium g can get by til you upgrade to i5 4460-4690

AMD is fine for gaming, its just if you want to start rendering/streaming/multitasking while gaming that you might want the extra oomph provided by intels superior hyperthreading, and better single core performance. but you pay for that with a price premium,

i built a pc in 2000 (intel full tower, nvidea graphics) and could have saved myself 200-300 dollars even back then by going with AMD. nowadays with my obligations... AMD for me. with the right tweaks and hardware, it is more than enough for me.

just go to pcpartpicker.com and check the prices out before you buy... and know that if you upgrade your processor you may need to upgrade the motherboard... and the power supply if you are going to put a graphics card in... and at that point may as well look at new cases... and case fans... and ugh.

im regretting buying a mATX case....

The biggest problem with AMD is that for games that use 2 cores, it will trail an Intel CPU, which has better single core performance (as you mentioned). They do fare well in multithreaded games though I'll give them that.

Their FX series are great CPUs for people who do video editing and rendering, but cannot afford an i7 or Xeon. The are great for streaming too.

In the end of the day, Intel is faster. But in most games, you'll still get a playable 60 fps in most games with an AMD CPU, providing your graphics card is good of course. Odds are, if you are saving money and getting an AMD CPU, you won't have a monitor that can show more than 60 fps anyway.

I would say get an AMD Athlon 760k or 750k and a GTX 750ti. The CPU isn't amazing, quite far from high end, but it will be better than your A4 and the graphics card, while budget end is much faster than the onboard hd 7480d.

At least by getting those components above, you won't need to change out your motherboard or your power supply.

You guys are really super helpful, thanks so much!! :)

if you are adding a dedicated gpu, step away from amd
760k is an apu with its gpu disabled
just go with a pentium g at the same price range
