Pentium G3258 Overclocking
hey,
ive got a rather stubborn pentium g that will not go above 4.2GHz. it is sitting in an asus z97 pro gamer motherboard. i have tried it at 4.4 with 1.31v but it will not get past the windows loading screen. i managed to clock my 3570k to 4.4GHz @ 1.17v with relative ease on an asus p8z77-v. i thought the g3258s were meant to overclock like rockets?

it is currently running at a stable 4.2@1.23v

for my run at 4.4 i disabled intel speed step, set load line calibaration to 8, set the OC tuner to XMP, manually inputted the voltage to 1.31, checked to see if the ram timings, voltage and frequency was correct and i didn't fiddle with anything else.

cooling is not an issue, nor is power

if anyone could offer me some advice that would be greatly appreciated,

Maybe you just got bad chip on the chip lottery, there is never any quarantees of how high particular chip will go, depends if you got good one or not.

but ive never heard of such a weak chip before. 4.2 is a terrible OC, especially for a g3258. I'll see if I can get it to boot, and report back with the voltage it wants

what cooler are you using?

try it at 4ghz
and see how the temps are at load

its under a corsair h55. Temps at 4.2 with 1.23v dont exceed 60 under 100% load

my target is 4.6. ive got it to 4.2 and it is stable. nothing i have done so far can get it to boot into windows @ 4.4 @ 1.31v. im going to follow a youtube tutorial exactly

Turn off Load Line calibration and turn up the voltage.

This chip can only manage 4.4GHz at 1.35vcore sadly. Anyhting over that and I'd have to raise the voltage past 1.4 which I feel uneasy about

if the temps are low higher vcore is fine

Are you sure, won't that increase the rate of degradation?

the temps never went above 73 celcius (10 'very high' runs of Intel Burn Test)

it consumed 46 watts. i think the chip has a 50w tdp right?

i had to use 1.35v to get mine to 4.5ghz. It can run at 4.6 but will randomly reboot about once a day. i haven't tried 1.4v, not cause i'm concerned about damaging the cpu but because from 4.5 there isn't much higher for it to go. The extra volt. isn't worth it just to get to 4.7 or so. I may try one day to find out its limit out of pure curiosity. I use a Seidon Cooler master 120mm.
