lets me play FC 4 in ultra settings
i wanna thro one of the mini models in my dell soon .. right now it has an AMD 7750 in there
sucks as i have that AMD R 9 270 X still and there is no way i can fit it in the old Dell due to the need for the second power connector and the PSU i have in there (450 watt) + space
the AMD R 9 270X card is just about half an inch too long :(
All gpu's that require extra power use pci connectors. There are also special adapters available that can convert molex or sata connectors to pci.
I want to keep this wooden (2007 as I've said) PC alive as long as I can, but I'm afraid an upgrade of a custom built PC will be inevitable at some point lol maybe in like 5 or 6 years xD
You should really open up your case and check what you have. What psu and what power cables available. Maybe you do have a 6pin pci power cable already, if not you you need to check what molex or sata cables you have and buy an adapter.
Even if you don't have a 6pin pci cable, there are usually some spare molex or sata cables. Or in the worst case, you could unplug your dvd drive and use it's cable. But yeah, you first need to check what you have.
They can be a potential fire harazard when you cope them with modern GPUs.
Wattage may be enough, however Amperage on the 12 Volt is lacking.
Assuming the GTX 960 need power of 120 Watt, the Amperage on the 12 Volt Rail should be atleast 20 A,considering GTX 960 need 10 A. alone.
Also the GT 630 dont need extra power connectors so i highly doubt your PSU has extra power connectors for GTX 960.
In short > you need a PSU upgrade
Also as stated on the Dell official page these pc usually have these CPUs
ntel® CoreTM 2 Duo und Intel® CoreTM 2 Extreme Prozessoren
Intel® CoreTM 2 Quad CoreTM Extreme Edition-Prozessor QX9650 (3,00 GHz, 12 MB, 1.333 MHz)
Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo-Prozessor E4400 (2,00 GHz, 2 MB, 800 MHz)
Intel® Quad CoreTM -Prozessor Q6600 (2,40 GHz, 1.066 MHz FSB, 8 MB Cache)
Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo-Prozessor E8500 (3,16 GHz, 6 MB, 1.333 MHz)
these CPUs are ancient and copping them even with the GTX 960. GTX 960 will be bottlenecked by these cpu in some circumstances.
In conclusion i would throw away this junk and build a new pc from scrath, because believe me it isnt worth the hassle to upgrade anything on this obsolet platform.
The only thing is worth to keep from this pc is HDD.
I know this isnt something you wanted to hear Upgrade and etc. but believe me you will be much happier with your new system considering your current pc is almost 8 years old (omg)
2 years in pc hardware is like a decade
my old Dell Dimension E 520 i flashed the bios ...to the latest one chucked in a Intel Core 2 quad Q6600 (came with a crap core 2 duo 1.8 )
added 6 gig of ram dell says it only supports 4 ..yea right well now it has 8 gig dell support also told me initially that i could not run a quad core in it
been running for over 2 yrs and i can even run Far Cry 4 on it @ 1600 X 900 with that AMD 7750
i got the machine from my neighbor who was chucking it because the hard drive failed
ASUS P5B
Intel Q6600 @ stock
8 gig of DDR 2 800 - pc2 6400
Asus Strix GTX 960 2 gig model
he may bottle neck on RAM as some of those Dells do not support DDR2 - 800 ..PC2 6400
only DDR2 pc2 5300
then go fire up afterburner and monitor the GPU usage during gaming and see how it constantly drops and tell me again there is no bottleneck. In ideal scenario the GPU usage should never drop below 99 %, otherwise it just proves the CPU cant keep up with the data to feed GPU.
Hell even my FX 8350 @ 4,8 Ghz cant keep my 2X R9 280X above 50 % usage in a good amount of games.
all i did was throw in a drive and its been working ever since
I recently bought a laptop but once that's paid off I will probably upgrade the PC too and salvage the HDD.
i dont need afterburner or run anything in the backround ..as long as my games are working.
.. i plan on getting a new MOBO / RAM and an I5 soon anyway ..but for now this old Q6600 has performed like a tank and i never even overclocked it
it even runs the witcher 3 with high settings (it came free with the GTX 960 tho i didnt play it alot not my kind of game )
running FC4 in ultra settings and getting about 50 FPS for highs @ 1080 P so for now i'm OK with what i got .. i DO plan on building a new system
just amazed this old board and CPU has lasted this long
Then that means my PC can probably run the mini 960 :D
yep ! got one in the old dell dimension e 521 ...and one in my old asus P5B
they were popular CPU's and can still run alot of games, and also were great overclockers
(tho ya cant overclock on a dell bios)
only reason i'm still running one is i saw no need so far to upgrade ..but i'm sure games are coming that i will need an I 5 / I7 and faster ram ..so i will be building a new system soon
i dont have to have 60 FPS to be happy .... i'm not picky if i'm hitting over 40 FPS
its fine and still looks great on my 40 inch screen @ 1080P
