Compare i5 2500k to DDR4 system?
Is it worth building a DDR4 system alongside an Intel Core i5 2500k that overclocks to 4.4GHz to 5.0GHz?

I.e. Such as the Z170 chipset with a Core i5 6600k.

To Do: Edit post and add more DDR4 systems for comparison when not on Steam Mobile.

EDIT: I am putting 32GB of DDR3 1866MHz CAS10 in it tomorrow.

imo, it is better if you upgrade gpu to nvidia gtx 970 or better (or amd gpu equivalent) since you still have a powerful cpu...

The bottom line

The Core i5 6600K is a great processor to get if you need a PC upgrade, but read that carefully ... IF you need a PC upgrade. If you feel your system is outdated and you would like features as USB 3.1, more SATA3 ports, better audio, better NICs or AC WIFI, that's where Skylake with a Z170 motherboard can make a lot of sense. Also if you are energy aware and want to reduce the Wattage numbers, honestly we have not seen a better product and platform to date. However if you purchased say a Core i7 2600K back in 2011 then you are looking at a 5 to 10% CPU performance increase. Compared to the Core i5 2500K that number runs up to 25~30%. That's just not a lot in the world of technology where 4 years is a long time. That is the sheer reality of Intel processors these days. Make no mistake, the Core i5 6600K remains to be a terrific 14nm desktop CPU with improved instruction sets, slightly better performance, DDR4 compatibility and decent overclocking headroom. Combined with a Z170 motherboard, a kickin' graphics card, some snazzy memory and an SSD this setup is Windows 10 and DirectX12 ready to frag away in your gaming experience. If you want to rule it all and have no budget restrictions, Haswell-E with 6 or 8-cores still rocks the best IMHO. The Core i5 6600K obviously is more than fast enough for even the most complex multi-GPU setups. It is an impressive and promising processor, but feels a little too close to its predecessors. We do recommend the processor, if you are in dire need for an upgrade. The Core i5 6600K will cost 243 USD, the Core i7 6700K 350 USD. If you want something more serious with that extra bite in the Skylake family, have a peek at the Core i7 6700K.

2nd gen i5 is stil good

esp the k, since it can overclock
put a good cooler on it and oc

if you need more fps, get a better gpu

Your CPU is still good. You should look into upgrading to between 16GB and 32GB of DDR3 RAM maybe though if you have any spare RAM slots right now.

Also do not know what your current GPU is but if from the same Era as the CPU then a GPU upgrade might provide the best performance boost. What GPU do you have now?

My current GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX770, the Gigabyte WindForce version with 4GB of GDDR5.

That said, I am mostly interested in how much extra performance is available CPU wise if I build a 2nd PC using DDR4 and what it would cost.

Not worth, just overclock it and you will be fine.

I switched away from my i5-2500k but only because I wanted an i7, not because it played games badly.

You will get way more performance from upgrading your graphics card if the quality isn't to your liking.

I'm already overclocking it, that's the point.

How do the modern DDR4 systems stack up against an i5 2500k at 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 4.9 and 5.0 GHz?

You'd think since Q1 2011 that some strides would have been made, especially with die size reductions.

The newer Skylake and all that jazz is good for someone just starting but not good for an upgrade. There isn't really a difference in gaming. The upgrade would cost you quite a bit as you would be literally building a new computer and merely using your GPU and hard drive from your current build.

You want a better upgrade? Go for a better GPU.
The Skylake on paper is supposed to be a 10% buff over Devils Canyon. We just built a i56600k Z170 build a week or so back. The 3Dmark and Unigine Benchmarks were slightly higher than 10% above the last builds benchmarks. More like 12-15%.

No one is denying that they are better.

But for the OP, gaming performance would be improved a lot better by upgrading his GPU.... and it would be a lot cheaper.

I'm happy to cost out a new DDR4 system as I just had a windfall of money. I don't have to buy it. Just be nice having a modern PC again.

Shame they're not much faster.

Any quad channel motherboards out there, for DDR3 or DDR4?
