Z170 is LGA-1151; DDR3 and/or DDR4; Dual-Channel
5th Gen (Skylake) CPUs support both of these DDR types; the board u buy will dictate the RAM required. This is the latest "consumer class"
X99 is LGA-2011; DDR4 Dual and Quad Channel support; Pro High-End Enthusiast class
Support for 6 and 8 Core Intel CPUs
X99 is for PC enthusiasts and can be expensive.
If you want Z97 - Haswell Refresh (Devil's Canyon) would be best for gaming purposes. That's a 4th Generation PC. It uses DDR3 memory which will slowly be discontinued over time.
5th Generation PC is Broadwell, and that should be ignored as a mere stepping stone.
Only DDR4, it's not backwards compatible and will have difference slot mark/sizes to prevent it. The motherboard doubles bandwidth across the memory.
Performence wise whats the best?
1)?
2)?
3)?
You will need to ensure it has an integrated memory controller.
Z170 would be logically the best and most future proof as a brand new build at this point of time.
EDIT:
Asus Z170-P D3 will support DDR3
Asus Maximus VIII only supports DDR4, but is a much better pick.
Z97 = Asus Maximus Hero VII
Z170 = Asus Maximus Hero VIII (more bandwidth of course)
It's not - Z170 is approx 10-15% overall more performance over a Z97, plus extremely higher bandwidth features such as USB 3.1, DDR4, etc.
