Z97 vs Z170 vs X99?
Just for gaming and editing videos. I have the Asus Maximus VII and I saw they have the VIII. I didnt know that Z170 chipsets exsisted untill a few min ago. What chipset out of the three is best (price doesnt matter although id still like a Bang-for-Buck ratio)

List them in order of best to worst and please give a reason why they are what they are

This is how i think they will be but still tell me what you think

1)X99
2)Z170
3)Z97

Am i correct?

The Intel 10 series is technically the latest. The X99 is for PC enthusiasts mainly, and you won't need it for everyday gaming.

Z97 is LGA-1150; DDR3; 4th Gen CPU support

Z170 is LGA-1151; DDR3 and/or DDR4; Dual-Channel
5th Gen (Skylake) CPUs support both of these DDR types; the board u buy will dictate the RAM required. This is the latest "consumer class"

X99 is LGA-2011; DDR4 Dual and Quad Channel support; Pro High-End Enthusiast class
Support for 6 and 8 Core Intel CPUs

Z170 - Intel Skylake is the latest and approx 10-15% faster than Haswell 4th Gen and 30% faster than Sandy Bridge 2nd Gen. That is a 6th Generation PC. It uses DDR4 memory.

X99 is for PC enthusiasts and can be expensive.

If you want Z97 - Haswell Refresh (Devil's Canyon) would be best for gaming purposes. That's a 4th Generation PC. It uses DDR3 memory which will slowly be discontinued over time.

5th Generation PC is Broadwell, and that should be ignored as a mere stepping stone.

I believe Intel still has plans to release the Broadwell series at some point. However the boundary between Skylake and Broadwell has blurred up so much lately, as performance of both should be just about the same.

Only DDR4, it's not backwards compatible and will have difference slot mark/sizes to prevent it. The motherboard doubles bandwidth across the memory.

You will need to ensure it has an integrated memory controller.

Z170 would be logically the best and most future proof as a brand new build at this point of time.

EDIT:

Asus Z170-P D3 will support DDR3
Asus Maximus VIII only supports DDR4, but is a much better pick.

Ok so i know what chip sets are the best but if it was between the Asus Maximus Hero VII and the VIII im asuming the newer one is better? On the Asus website it says its "6 times faster" at bandwidth and what ever.

Newer chipset will certainly provide enhancements. But whether you as an average user will be able to fully take advantage of them is another story.

They are different generation motherboards and chipsets:
Z97 = Asus Maximus Hero VII
Z170 = Asus Maximus Hero VIII (more bandwidth of course)

Also why Z97 ~= Z170? I would think there would be a distinct diffrence between them. And i thought that X99 was better than Z97

It's not - Z170 is approx 10-15% overall more performance over a Z97, plus extremely higher bandwidth features such as USB 3.1, DDR4, etc.
