was designed for aii/pii and modded to run fx at nerfed specs
but the board has a 95w limit due to its very poor vrm design
plain 3 phase(last used on am2), should be 65w max
capable of 95w only because it will throttle the cpu under load
sell the cpu and board combo as is and get something much better
I will do that then and change the ram in the process, thanks for the quick answer guys.
Any old FX 6300 should work in your motherboard. You can get that for now and it will work.
As has been mentioned a motherboard replacement would be ideal. Also if you can afford it I would suggest that you step up to the FX 8320E as it has 8 unlocked (for overclocking) cores. It can be overclocked (on a good motherboard and with custom higher-than-stock performance CPU cooler) to be just like a FX 8350 or one of the faster ones.
Here's a suggestion if you want a new board and new CPU:
AMD FX-8320E 3.2GHz 8-Core Processor
ASRock 990FX Extreme6 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/hfgw8d
Base Total: $253.98
Mail-in Rebates: -$30.00
Shipping: $3.99
Total: $227.97
Please note that this motherboard is full ATX sized and will require a full ATX case. Your previous motherboard was Micro-ATX and would fit a smaller case.
If you have a Micro-ATX case there are two options:
1. Get a new full ATX sized case for cheap like so:
Azza Cosmas ATX Mid Tower Case
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/azza-case-csaz208s
Newegg $34.99 -$15.00 +FREE s/h In stock $19.99
$15.00 mail-in rebate
OR
2. Get the only Micro-ATX sized motherboard with a 970 chipset (a bit better than your current) and more VRM than you have now with VRM heatsink for better power delivery:
AMD FX-8320E 3.2GHz 8-Core Processor
ASRock 970M PRO3 Micro ATX AM3+/AM3 Motherboard
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jsm4vK
Base Total: $188.98
Mail-in Rebates: -$15.00
Shipping: $7.56
Total: $181.54
Please note that FX 6300 or FX 8320E CPUs can use up to DDR3-1866 RAM natively for two sticks or DDR3-1600 RAM for 4 sticks. DDR3-1866 CAS 8,9 or 10 at 1.5V (or less) or DDR3-1600 CAS 9 (9,9,9,24) or lower at 1.5V or lower would thus be reasonable RAM choices. I'm not sure if you were thinking of changing to 8GB or 16GB?
I can recommend a specific kit if you would like and want to tell me what you need.
(between the ancient chipset and vrm throttling)
he could spend $180 and get an i3 or g3258
or not much more for an i5 4460 and board

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($175.99 @ SuperBiiz)
