is 5mb of internet enough for online pc gaming?
i am going to test it anyway, by purchasing a unlimited hotspot, and buy a wifi adapter for my pc and connect to the hotspot. I think i will get around 5mb.

but is there anyone of you, who played online pc game with connecting to the hotspot? Hows the performance.

i am thinking about doing this because, the interruption of internet usage is a bit annoying

yes

but only if the ping is low to isp and games servers
anything else that is consuming enough bandwidth will cause lag spikes in games

my game is csgo, apex, sometime l.o.l. If it can reach <70, that would be awesome.

I know mhw, gta v couldn't, cause even with my 100mbps, I still get timed out, lags, etc.

12.5 MB/s (100mbps) is a lot of data for a multiplayer game to transfer - I would think that 100mbps is plenty for any game.

If that's how much it is using per player, and say there are 12 players - that server would be using 150 MB/s - over 1 gigabit just for 12 players does not make sense. There is likely another factor involved there.

I have used a mobile hotspot to play CS:S before, and it just lags too much - 50ms ping, but lagging a lot. Only did it because of an internet outage.

Unlikely to be from raw bandwidth alone but rather other factors.

Timing out means the connection was lost for a given amount of time and then terminated.

"Lag" is am umbrella term that can be about a dozen things.

Ping is the delay of time between input and receiving a response. Larger distance between you and the server or other factors can impact this.

Even 5 Mbit would be way more than enough for most games.

for cs and source games 5m is enough
all thats really needed is to download custom sprays once new players connect to the server you are on

gta will need more since alot more is going on and there is more player/car customization in the game

To game yes.
The game downloads will be exceptionally slow.

I’m on a 5 mb down, never had any issues. Ping isn’t great, but that’s because my router isn’t in the master socket.

Bandwidth has nothing to do with online gaming. The big numbers are how fast downloads are, not gaming. For gaming you need like 10-150 KB/s up and down. A modem from 2000 could do that. Really important is stability and delay. So don't play via satellite or WiFi Hotspots.

I used to play online, on the PS3 days, for example, with like 2mb. It's perfectly possible.

Expect hiccups and lagg if you're playing with/against people with high ping, though.

I imagine people will still be assuming bandwidth and ping are directly tied together for another twenty five years...

They must assume more bandwidth means higher cost, higher cost means "better quality", and better quality means better ping

I used to play WOW on a dial-up connection. I just stayed away from any raids that were going on. Bandwidth is less important than ping.

It doesn't help that ISPs offer different tiers of speed packages and describe lower speed ones as mostly suited for general browsing and light entertainment, and higher speed ones as better for gaming and heavier streaming (unless they also attempt to offer better ping times on higher speed packages but that hasn't been my experience with the DSL nor cable providers I've had in my area in the last decade or two).

Also important to note is that WiFi is ♥♥♥♥ for gaming. Public ones are even worse.
It's all Half-Duplex. WiFi was never designed for fast transmission. Gaming is all about speed.
You might get away with a good private setup but public WiFi providers don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about your gaming experience.

it depends on your ping not your speed! so if you have less than 200 ms ping from an popular american server (where all matchmaking servers are located) most of the time you are good
