can you connect a 144hz monitor to a 60hz laptop and still play with 144hz?

I have an Acer NItro 5 Ryzen 5 with 2500U, and Rx560X graphics card with 60hz display. I am planning on buying a 144hz external monitor so I can game on 144hz with no problems. I have a HDMI version 2.0a on my laptop. So I was wondering if I could successfully connect my 60hz display laptop to my 144hz external monitor without any problems??

but depending on the cpu, gpu, game and settings, 144fps may not be possible

Yes, but you'll have to drop your settings to the lowest because those specs are made for 60 FPS goals

Wait can i set the 144hz t o120hz and would that help or no?

No.
All that will do is make the refresh rate 120Hz instead of 144Hz. It doens't change the fact that you need to lower settings as low as you can to get 120+ FPS.

The refresh rate (i.e. 144Hz, 60Hz) is just the rate of which the display refreshes. 60Hz refreshes 60 times per second, while 144Hz refreshes 144 times per second.
When refresh rate and FPS are out of sync, it won't feel as nice the farther apart they become.

How low should the setting be cuz i mainly care a lot about graphics so I at least medium to high graphics on gta v for example.

if the laptop has a dp output, 144hz can work
hdmi may be limited to 60-120hz

hz =/= fps

disable vsync with the current setup and see what the fps maxes at

2500U and 560X is pretty low end, don't expect anywhere near 144 FPS without low/lowest settings in many titles.

test with your current display, if it cant hold 60fps, it wont have a remote chance of hititng 144fps

I get 50FPS on very high settings with v sync off.

Basically expected for those specs, like I told you, it's low end.

All you can do is lower your settings, but even then, the 2500U is weak and won't hold up at 144 frames in many titles, same goes for the RX 560X.

OK just replied in your 4k thread, if you only get 50fps now at what I'll guess is at 1080p, you won't get any more by changing to a faster monitor unless you lower settings, alot, even then, I don't think the cpu is fast enough to actually get to 144fps even at lowest settings and the 560 isn't powerful enough to play at 4k.

Do you just want a bigger screen, which is why you are looking at connecting to an external monitor? If that's the case, just buy a 1080p 60hz panel and save alot of money unless you plan a heck of a laptop upgrade in the near future.

HDMI port is not same as refresh rate on the laptop screen. It has a flex ribbon cable for save more money when build a laptop. Final, it has an internal output video switcher. So, you can get 240 Hz for 1080p, 144 Hz for 1440p, and 60 Hz for 4K.

I could generally connect such screens to laptops and get a higher frequency. But it may depend on the laptop. I am not entirely sure about this model. Maybe ask Acer as well, because they build it.
I tried a 120 Hz. screen on an Acer laptop once, and it did worked at 120 Hz.

120Hz. is enough, for regular-sized screens. I could not notice much (if any) difference between 120Hz. and 144Hz. Both will look fine. 144 Hz. seems a little bit overrated. You would definitely not see the major change, that you will see when going from 60 to 120.

Maybe 240 or 250 Hz. will give you another worthwhile change, but I haven't been able to test those yet.

Anyway, most laptops will probably struggle to even give you frame rates over 200 frames per second, in most cases.
