GPU fans ramp up to 100% when temp hits 82 Celsius (Overriding custom fan curve as well)
As the title says, my ASUS ROG STRIX 2080TI does this regardless of my custom fan curve (MSI Afterburner).

I can't ever recall having this problem. So it may be since I updated to 460.89?

When the fans ramp up to 100%, MSI Afterburner still shows 65% fan speed (my custom fan speed), Fans go back down to 65% (RPM equivalent) once the temp drops below 82 Celsius.

Anybody going through this or have a fix for it?

Thank you.

Chances are the card's vBIOS is responsible because it's trying to protect the card; 80+ degrees is close to throttle temperature. Your efforts are better off focused on improving airflow conditions inside your case, and if you're overclocking, seeing if lowering it does anything for load temperature.

I guess so. But I never had this problem before. Either way, I guess I need to keep my room cool. The issue is that I have a Corsair 280X as my case, and with the case side panel open I still get max temps of 75-82 Celsius in the most demanding games. The case that I have is simply the worst one for airflow. Nice looking case but horrible airflow.

The thing is, my fans ramp up randomly at even lower temps for no reason as well. Not often, but it does do this sometimes.

Because it has a Temp Limit of 84*C so the GPU BIOS is attempting to keep the GPU from nearing any sort of "over-heat" situation. By this is just a default, you can set MSI AB to a Skin so you can see Power Limit and Temp Limit, un-link the Chain between them, point the arrow @ Temp Limit so that is the Priority and set this to 90*C, which for modern GTX/RTX, up to 91*C is deemed safe, just may result in less performance as the GPU will start auto down-clocking at around 80-85*C ranges to help keep the card cooler.

Take your PC apart and clean everything, make it entirely free of dust.

Redo the thermal paste on the GPU Core.

Install good amount of case fans to help ensure overall good airflow for everything within.

Also may help to use a Vertical Sync method or set an FPS Limit in RivaTuner (RTSS)

To be fair this case is not this bad. Space for 2x 280 and 1x 240 radiators and 6 fans. Maybe you should use more then 2 default fans for this case.

Everything you have mentioned sounds right. I guess my room was really hot that day as I rarely hit 81+ Celsius. I just can't remember the fans ramping up that high automatically. Maybe it always did and I just never really noticed.

I don't want to redo the paste as it will void my warranty and I plan to sell soon for a 3080. I will be some compressed air and clear any dust. There isn't a lot of dust at the moment from what I can see.

The thing is, I recently moved to a 144hz monitor so maybe that's why my temps are a little higher than usual as before I always gamed at locked 60fps.

Thank you.

It's ok. I only have one fan left to add, right at the bottom of the case under the GPU. I already have one, looks like I need another one.

Did you consider that your custom fan curve is not good? At 80 deg the fans are only running at 65%? The card is saving itself because the fan curve is not doing the job.

Yeah, I did change it since today. I pushed it to 70% now. Anything higher than that is too loud. At the moment playing CoD CW it doesn't go over 75 degrees when before it went would reach 82 degrees.

I will monitor it and see if I need to up it.
