is GTX 960 2GB ok for gaming?
So I bought a new rig, now I'm choosing the GPU. I had settled for GTX 960, until I just saw Assassin's Creed Syndicate requires at least 4GB of Vram. And the same goes for GTA V.

I'm going to be playing at 1366*768 resolution, so will that card be enough for at least 2~3 years for gaming at medium settings and getting a constant 30FPS that doesn't go below 20FPS?

I might replace my current i3 4150 with an i5 4400, and maybe add another 8GB ram later on (To make a total of 16GB)

Do you think this will be a good enough system to run games at +30 FPS @720p resolution?

Do you think I should go for an i5 4440? or is i3 4150 is sufficient enough? Because right now most games that I play never exceed 80% of core usage, Even when recording. So is it worth it or not?

And if the GTX 960 isn't good enough, will GTX 970 4GB good?

Thanks!

$410 isn't too bad, those taxes go to good use.

The GTX 960 is a decent mid range card. On recent titles, you may have to turn down a few settings because of thr VRAM, though for that resolution, 2gb is probably be enough for some games.

For the GPU you'll probably get a couple years out of it, though you won't be maxing out games with only 2gb VRAM.

As for the CPU, I would suggest going the i5 route nowadays, for the recent stuff, 4 real cores are better than two. That said, I reckon you'll probably get another year out of it and at least it isn't a Pentium. There are some games now that those cannot even launch. In most cases the i5 4460 is cheaper than the 4440 by the way.

I noticed you said in an earlier post that you render videos. That will usually benefit from a quad core.

If you want to try AC Syndicate, give it a go, as you can always get a refund if it doesn't run.

Thanks for the info! Lol, though I seriously doubt AC Syndicate will run on an iGPU (Intel HD 4400)

Ah, I thought you already had the card, thats what I get for not reading the posts properly.

Have you considered the R9 380 also? Usually priced the same, but is a faster GPU in most cases. Might be able to find a good price on a 4gb version.

What software do you use for editing and rendering your videos? If its Vegas or Premiere Pro, an i5 or similarly priced Xeon E3 (these are i7s without the onboard graphics) would be a benefit here.

I use Camtasia, But as I also said earlier, the video usually gets rendered very quick, about 10~20 minutes. I just go off and do something else. I don't record more than 15 minutes, so it doesn't take that much time to render.

As for the GPU, r9 380 is much worse than GTX 960:

Plus that GPU is available here for the price of GTX 970, which is also much better not only than the R9 380, but also the GTX 960:

2g is fine for the gtx 960
its not fast enough to make use of 4g
will allow for higher settings, but its not strong enough to hold 60+fps at settings thst would require 4g of vram

Don't compare the specs of a GPU, compare the performance. For most games, the 380 (especially the 4gb version) is faster. The GTX 960 is still a good card though and will play games just fine.

However, the 380 isn't worth it though if its priced same as the GTX 970 in your area though, that is much faster than both 380 and the 960.

If you want a GTX 960 have a read of this:

If this does happen, the 4gb models should hopefully go down in price. It might be worth the wait.

960 runs everything, i own one, no regrets. Go for the 4GB version if you find it, on 1080p you won't really exceed the 2GB vram, appart from GTA 5 which i can run with about 3GB of 2GB and not a single problem or fps decrease, but it's always handy to have the extra 2.
I run all the games on max 1080p on a stable 60fps+.
It's cheap and good, specially at your resolution there's no reason to have higher than this.
You will see lots of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about this GPU but it's decent, so take it from me and buy it.
Thanks Man! If you can run all your games maxed out on 1080p, I bet I could do the same only get more fps!

I'm actually perfectly fine at gaming anything above 30FPS, especially if it doesn't go below 20FPS.

Yes, That's why I'm not going for anything AMD, because they are very expensive in India for some reason :/

Well, After some video searching, I found out that it runs ever game at +60 FPS on 1080p monitors! While it does struggle somewhat in Witcher Wild Hunt, the rest (GTA V, Evolve, BattleField Hardline, Project Cars, Mad Max etc) get usually 60+ FPS! I guess I might be able to get about 80~100FPS since I have 720p Monitor. Though If I do get my hands on the 4GB version, I sure as hell will grab that! (As of now, there are no 4GB versions)

I have the GTX960 2GB and I was wondering about future proof too, but the PC community will call anything that doesn't perform at 60fps on ultra settings with 4K res an obsolete piece of hardware. The simple fact is just drop the res or a setting or two and you're good to go.

It also isn't sensible for too many games to demand ridiculous specs as they will target too small of a customer base, which is why the games come with such in depth video settings.

I will probably purchase Fallout 4, so a day or two after release you can message me and see how I run on different settings (but there will for sure be youtube videos of this type of thing popping up).

Everyone has their own personal preferences, some prefer 60fps, others don't mind less. Some demand ultra graphics settings, others don't mind medium. Not every PC gamer demands the best, quite the oppisite to be honest.

Problem is for some, if you get too used to 60fps, you'll most likely have trouble adjusting to anything less, then all of a sudden 30fps feels unplayable.

Anyhow, you'll still get a good few years out of your GTX 960, particularly if you don't have a problem with dropping a few settings. As for the high requirements of games, I would guess the devs do that to cover themselves should people with lower end hardware start complaining about performance.

Yes, I agree with the 60FPS problem! People do get addicted to it. I'm playing many games (watch Dogs, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3 etc) On medium at 20~30 FPS, and whenever I launch any Source Game (Half Life 2, Black Mesa etc) I get 60FPS and it looks sooo smooth, and I can't game on 20FPS for a week! (Because it simply seems so laggy and stuff) but after a while I get used to it! So I guess it's safe to say that the GTX 960 will live on for 2 years at my resolution and run everything at high at +30FPS. Then maybe I'll start reducing the settings, but hey, 2~3 years is enough time for me!

Hmm, Well, I found a 4GB version of the GPU, but it's only $70 less expensive than GTX 970 4GB. Damn it's hard to choose a GPU in India :D
