Using a wrong heatsink for a CPU
Hi all,
I have a motherboard and i don't know whether it works or not, so I ordered a cheap CPU which fits the socket, just so that I can test it and see if it posts. My question is, for the few seconds that it's on just to see if it posts, can I just place a fan and heatsink on top of the processor which wasn't made for the processor? The CPU I ordered doesn't come with a cooler, but I do have a spare lying around, so I thought I would literally just put it on for a few seconds while it posts, as obviously I can't screw it in properly if it's for another socket. The main thing I'm worried about is that the heatsink is quite old, and maybe it won't cool it well enough, and the CPU will melt?

Thanks for reading, please give me advice on whether I should try this or not.

what mobo?
what cpu did you buy?
what cooler do you have?

do you have any thermal paste?

do not run a cpu without a cooler

The mobo is an Asus B85M-G and the CPU a Pentium G3220. The heatsink is something i pulled from a computer which used to have a Pentium D 820 in it. And yes, I have thermal paste.

As long as the cooler fits that Motherboard Socket then u should be ok; but without the proper application of thermal paste you at least will want to fully secure the cooler to the board. DO NOT just sit the cooler on the CPU for contact purposes; as without the two surface meshing together well, the CPU can potentially get too hot and then shutdown the board.

A cooler made for LGA-775 (the socket of the Pentium D 820) should still fit properly onto other Intel Sockets, such as LGA 1155 and 1150

g3220 is a low wattage cpu
the 775 cooler should work good enough on it
if you can get it tight to the cpu

Yea Pentium G is almost half the TDP wattage of the old Pentium D; so the cooler from a "D" should work fine on a newer 1155/1150 Pentium G or i3 series

Great, thanks for all the replies I think I'll be fine from here onwards.
