I know wecomended psu for the GTX 970 is 500w but I have a Corsair 430. Do you think it will work with and i5-4460 and the GTX 970?

get an EVGA 600wB its only like 5$ and with more power hungry gpus it should be a bit future proof

cx430 can run that fine

my htpc has an amd pii build with 95w cpu and gts250 (same wattage as gtx970)
with a cx430m, works just great with 2x hdds, cam, xbox reciever, and charges ps3/4 controllers
also have a sound card and tv tuner

eXtreme PSU calculator suggest a 439W
Cooler Master suggests a 399W
PSU calculator suggests a 396W
newegg suggests a 681W

The 970 at stock speeds pushes something over 300w on full load. The i5-4460 is about 80w.

Even if you have a plat 80 plus 430w... it would be pushing near full usage everytime you game. This is not even considering all the other components you have installed. I would recommend nothing less than a high quality 500w.

psu calcs give an overrated recomendation

cx430 is nearly a 500w psu

get a kill-a-watt meter to find out how much it really uses

gtx970 is not a 300w gpu, its a 145w gpu
nvidia recomends a 500w psu, but thats with a maxed out system 200w cpu, 6-8 hdds, fans and loaded with accessories

I agree with almost everything you say about hardware on these forums... except for PSU's. Why? Because I have helped many people and fixed many computers over the years and a LOT of issues arise from a power supply not giving enough power.

I'm not saying this guy should go out and get a $200 PSU but he should at least be getting a quality 500w PSU.

Whilst it would run on your Corsair 430, you would be cutting it close and it is good to have some "breathing room" with PSUs. Take capacitor/component aging into account as well, that 430w may start giving you problems as the PSU ages, particularly if you are pushing it to the max.

A good 500w would probably be better in the long run.

my suggestion, just for future proofing and so you're not running it hot would be something similar to the EVGA supernova NEX 750 (GOLD). I know that particular one has been discontinued but something similar would be good. Keeps the heat of the PSU down and if you upgrade your GPU/CPU or even put in a 2nd GPU at some point, you should be able to manage it. :)
