If I'm not wrong, I remember Apple pushing out updates that deteriorate the battery life of previous generations of iPhones, to make people buy the next model. I don't know if they're still doing that, but they surely did when I had the 7 and they launched 10. Now I kinda miss the iOS look and feel, but I'm never going back to someone who used to rob me..
2% drop in a day is nothing, where are you getting the idea that it's bad?
any new apps installed?

was wifi/bt/gps toggled on
are you holding it wrong?

apple repair = throw it away and get a new one

I think you are HEAVILY misinformed. Battery health is meant to go down 1% every 2 months. Not 2% in one day. I can't even find anyone having this issue online except for me.

Your post is vague and points to power usage vs your battery has degraded and does not take a full charge.

You should stop short charging it and let it discharge to %50ish then try fully charging it a couple times.

Discharge and battery health are two very different things.

Ps, battery health should not go down %1, period, after 2 months.

You confused this with the iPhone slowdown, which Apple says it was doing to save the battery.
Similar thing happened to me, after 7 months of using my iPhone (bought and used since August 2019), the battery health dropped from 100% to 91% and remained like that since then.

But only after they had been called out for surrepticiously updating phones with the slowdown update. IF it were purely for the stated reason of saving battery, why not announce it first? That slowdown led many to upgrade their phones thinking their older phones were too slow or obsolete.

my battery was 40% after a full charge by 11AM man. Im never going back to Apple.
This is your choice. My wife in opposite never used Android.
How long did you keep it on the charger after it was fully charged?
Keeping a phone on the charger long after its been fully charged can affect battery life

But it could also be a learning curve for the phone
no idea

The old "don't let your phone sit for long periods of times after it has charged completely" times have died bro. Nowadays phones use Li-ion which stops receiving power after it has been charged 100%, so you can let your phone charge overnight and have nothing to worry about, your battery life will be the same. Your battery will only decrease in health after many many charging cycles (after 3000 or earlier but not before 1600 cycles), just like a car tire.

You shouldn't believe in fairy tales
Hasnt died considering the fact Samsung phones give a warning about it
And with how Lithium and Lipo batteries work, its fact not fiction.

And with that said, its a fact that Laptop batteries do run into issues if they are plugged in all the time and not allowed to discharge. So its possible for phone batteries to run into the same thing "At some point", not necessarily for brand new devices but you never know.

That aside
i only mentioned it as a POSSIBILITY i wasnt saying that was in FACT the cause, considering i dont like iphones and would never use one thus i have no experience with its battery performance over time.

or did you miss where i mentioned the learning curve?
And "No idea"

Oh..
And Phones dont stop getting power at 100%, the power draw simply reduces to a couple mA's but its still having a charge put into it even if it is a very small amount. Feel free to test this with a USB meter, something i use Daily for testing 18650's, USB Power banks and Chargers..

One thing i just thought about though
Is the OP using an Apple OEM Charger/Cable or a 3rd party? The XR doesnt come with a power adapter, only the cable.

THAT could in fact cause battery issues.
