Don't think a 390 4gb card exists? did you mean a 290 4gb? those 2 gpus use the same core. but the 390 has double the ram capacity, faster ram speed, less power draw, and more OC headroom. both variants have 2,560 stream processors. 160 Texture Mapping Unit's, 40 Compute Units.
the 390x / 290x are the same cores. 2816 Stream Processors, 176 Texture Mapping Units, 44 Compute Units. Vram is also doubled in the R9 390x compared to the 290x.
convincing arguments say that "r9 390 is clear winner here".
Doesn't matter that many test can prove otherwise.
I own both Nvidia and AMD products. both are great companys. i posted videos above of several benchmarks proving which is the better card for the $$. and from personal experience (i own both 970 and 390). so no... i'm not the fanboy here. nice try though?
I can show benchmarks of the GTX 970 winning by 5-10 FPS at 1080p resolution, yet the R9 390 performing better at 4K UltraHD by 5 FPS... however, it's all just getting down to personal taste and what you want it for, plus what is 5-10 FPS difference (depending on each individual game, in this case it was GTA 5). There's not too much difference, but rather pros and cons for each. Why fight about it? Just let the post owner decide for himself, either way ain't that bad.
R9 290 is on par with GTX 970.
R9 390 and R9 290X are both ahead.

Brand new card, probably hard to find like I said...
Thanks for the post. you're right, the evidence is quite clear.
390 offers the same performance as 290X.
The 290 is the exact same gpu as the 390. just add a couple more % to performance due to its faster and larger ram. other than that its the exact same.

Hey have you heard about GPUopen? AMD just announced it. it's almost like an "Ace in the hole" response to gameworks. and above all its open source!!

(Yes that's a 380x review but it has the 970 and the 390 on the charts too.)
