Is the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB SSD a good choice ?
Hi all :lunar2019piginablanket:

I've been meaning to get an SSD for quite a while now and picked up a 980 Pro today. The 970 Evo Plus 1TB was 100, the 980 Pro 1TB was 130. I figured the price gap was so small, I might aswell go for the 980 Pro. Was this a good choice, or should I return it and get the 970 Evo Plus ? It's not really about the 30 bucks I'd be saving, and more about me worrying the 980 Pro might be somehow worse despite being the newer option.

I'm assuming these are sata SSD's?

The 970 Evo Plus has:
Read: 3500 MB/s
Write: 3200 MB/s
Cache: 512MB

The 980 Pro has:
Read: 7000 MB/s
Write: 5000 MB/s
Cache: SLC-Cache

They are both NVMe M.2.

You answered your own question then. :)

I know the 980 Pro is obviously better stat-wise. I'm just worried the 980 Pro is worse in some way. Newer does not equal better in my opinion. I found a lot of positive opinions on the 970 Evo Plus, while the 980 Pro was simply stated as 'better', and that's it.

I don't understand your reasoning.

The 970 Plus series wa released first in 2019. It makes Sense that a tested and older hardware type has more reviews than a new product.

I wouldn't worry about it; it's all made in a handfull of factories in China anyways

They're both good drives. The evo plus is a good Gen3 consumer NVMe. The 980 pro is a good Gen4 professional grade NVMe. Samsung has been making high quality SSDs for many years now. That hasn't changed with the current product lineup, as far as I know.

Both use TLC - good.
Both are tested and well made in general - good.
Both have same warranty in terms of TBW & duration - good.
980 Pro uses PCI4, is therefore on compatible mainboards twice as fast in bursts - bit better.

For 30 bucks, meh, i would have gone for it too.

Thanks for the advice! :winter2019happyyul: I was really unsure. I was worried the small price gap had a reason afterall.
i was looking at this too and the lifespan of the 970 is longer than 980
Really either choice would have been fine. You went with the 980, which is the faster model. I think it's a good idea.

Even if you went the other way though, you still wouldn't lose because of the savings. So win/win either way!

... Citation needed.
https://ssdsphere.com/samsung-970-pro-vs-980-pro/

"Quick summary: After comparing both the Samsung NVMe SSDs, it’s clear that Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD is way faster as compared to Samsung 970 Pro. The obvious reason is its PCIe 4.0 x4 lanes. However, Samsung 970 Pro has much better endurance compared to Samsung 980 Pro."

Ah, thanks for the documentation. ^^ Yes, if you have PCIe v. 4, the 980 Pro is def. a better choice. I run PCIe v. 3 and use both models: the 980 Pro for my daily driver/Windows 10 and the 970 EVO + for Windows 11.

The 980 Pro is faster even in PCIe, to my perception and running them via Crystal Disk benchmark. For longevity--it's coming up on a year with my 980 installed and it's still at 100% remaining life via HWiNFO. I don't install a lot of software though, and haven't reinstalled Windows in a while. Already, though, I consider the money for my 980 Pro very well spent (got it on sale)

That doesn't compare the 970 evo (plus), which is the question of this topic.
Sidenote: their "endurance rating" is plainly due warranty rating.

Not sure how that is a good measurement.

Ooo, nice catch, I didn't notice that. Yes, it's the 970 EVO + in question.

I do stand behind my personal experiences w/both nvme/s.

Would this 980 Pro even fit into my ASRock Z390 Pro4 ? It does not support PCiE 4.0, so would PCiE 3.0 work ? I also don't know if it supports this "NVMe". Performance would definetly be throttled, but my concern is mainly if it would actually work. I don't want to end up with an opened SSD that doesn't work and is unable to be returned.
