Power Supply-Motherboard Compatibility

Hey guys, I am in the process of replacing parts of my gateway dx4870 and I already recieved a new 500 Watt power supply from EVGA. The issue is that my Power Supply won't work on the on board motherboard (ipimb-ar). I've recently placed an order on the ASUS P8H6 -M LE/CSM R.2 LGA1155 and now I'm wondering if this power unit will even work on that.
The reason why I don't think the power supply worked on my old motherboard is that it is either just straight up incompatible (there was no cable for the SATA3 holder on the motherboard unlike the OEM power supply, everything else was covered) or it is dead on arrival.

The PSU won't turn on when I plug it in and plug in all the stuff for the drivers. I'm assuming it's the MOBO and not a DOA PSU. Like I said above the OEM Mobo had one cable that connected to something labeled SATA3. Refer to the picture you posted. At the bottom left of the board of the image you posted, there are six rectangular slots (5 black one blue). The OEM PSU has a cable that connects to SATA3 (top left rectangle of the six).

Yes I can downgrade. Also, the reason why I'm upgrading is to run the MSI GTX 750 TI Twin Frozer thingy GPU. I don't really need to upgrade the PSU because the GTX 750 can run on a 300 watt PSU, but I'm doing it to be safe/certain.

The only SATA power should be going from the PSU to your Optical/HDD/SSD type of Drives.
The SATA coming off the board itself is for Data to said drives; not power.

All that should affect main power working are these:
- Main 20+4pin power + 4pin CPU Power
- Main power cord to PSU and main power switch on the outside of the PSU being flipped ON.
- Front I/O properly connected from Case to Motherboard, which connects your Case Power Button and LEDs to the Motherboard.

Hmm, well for the gateway motherboard (ASUS is shipping now), I followed the instructions on my PSU and it wouldn't boot.
-The Main 20+4 pin and +4 CPU pin are attatched
-The main chord is attatched
-Are you talking about the hardware bays being connected to the motherboard (what is I/O), in that case yes.
The OEM PSU still works. The EVGA fan doesn't even turn on.

Would I be able to test the EVGA by plugging it into the socket without being connected to anything? Or will I just hurt myself

Then I would suspect the EVGA PSU is DOA

Again did u make sure to check the switch on the outside of the PSU, right next to where the power cord plugs in? Without that main switch being on, no power will come through.

As I was just covering all bases, not sure if you disconnected anything else, removed the board, etc. But yea if hooking up the original PSU and system works, I suspect a bad PSU.

yah the main switch is on. i didn't tamper with the I/O chords. I only removed chords that belonged to the PSU.
I did the paper clip test and nothing happened with the PSU. I guess it's DOA and I'm shipping it back to Amazon. What a dissapointment

No PSU fan on paper clip test, yea return/refund it.

If were me, I'd buy a better model anyways.

The SATA-cable is probably tied to the psu cables with a cable strap but like said before it is not part of the psu. it was just tied to the cables to have it out of the way. cut the cable strap and keep it before you toss the psu.

Hmm ok. So i got a replacement of the same PSU, and I plugged it into the new motherboard. The LED light turns on (green), but no power is given off by the PSU to power any of the fans. The CPU is in there and is supported. Is there an issue with the load? Will the fan not turn on because 500W is too much? OR is this PSU also DOA?

Yes take some pictures; u can post them to your Steam > Artwork, or upload to a free site like IMGUR.com and then post the links here to share the pics.

A higher wattage PSU won't matter, the system will only draw what it requires.

I just have a feeling u don't understand what all you are doing; the system can't power on if u do not connect the Front I/O (mainly the Case Power Button) correctly to the Motherboard, that is how u power on the system; the switch on the outside of the PSU is just the main power, which of course also needs to be on.

yah you are right i have no idea what I'm doing lol. It's my first "build". well not really a build, just me swapping out parts.

A tech expert looked at my PC free oc charge and told me this: my Computer Case and motherboard are not compatible with each other (The power button cable isn't compatible, which doesn't allow the it to POST [his words]). So I guess I'm buying a new case.
