depending on what model you get
i3 = dual core with ht
i5 = quad core
i7 = quad core with ht
the alienware steambox alpha does not have upgradable gpu
only ssd/ram/cpu can be upgraded in it
In modern games 6970 should hit between 7850 http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1076?vs=1061 it's up and down with the 7850.
Pss, the defining factor for what gpu you can get will be cpu/psu/case size.

Your GPU should be roughly similar to a GTX 570.
If you want the best performance for your money, you can get way better parts for the same cost building it yourself.
Perfect!
My problem though, after a quick review video is that they dont support an audio jack.
Also the non-upgrade thing has me sort of puzzled too. What is the point of owning a Steambox, if i cant upgrade it?
Alienware really did not think this thing through enough. I hope VALVE removes them from their front page soon. The ZoTAC liks much better both hardware, and overall design.
thanks everyone.
The Zotac box is definitely better, but it is also more expensive
