Monitor won't connect to new desktop.
I bought a gtx 970 and asus z170 pro gaming motherboard, with evga supernova 750 bronze power supply, and nzxt s340 case, and I just finished putting it together. Everything on the motherboard lights up, but the fans on the gtx 970 are not. I assume this is because the graphics card is not yet 60•c, but I could be wrong. I think I plugged everything in correctly, as everything on the case, the motherboard, and even the usb devices that i plugged into the back, but I'm a first time builder, so i could be wrong. The problem comes in when, for some reason, my monitor fails to register the desktop. It works with my laptop and lights up when I turn it on, so the monitor is fine. I tried plugging it in to the motherboard/ back with a vga cable, but nothing showed. When I tried using the vga-vgi-i adapter and plugging the vga cable from my monitor to the video card portion of the back, the screen remains black. Anyone have an idea as to what might be wrong?

Does your GTX card feel loose in the case? If so, you may have made the noob mistake of not actually pushing it in all the way. You don't need to hammer it, but if it didn't make a click, chances are you need to push it in more. Also, it needs to have the external PCI-E power cords in.

I made that mistake with my R9 280. I had been in a complete panic, when my brother walked over, pushed me aside, slammed it down and instantly, the computer reboots with my sexy R9 280 now powering it.

And restarting it twice did the trick... Oops

In all seriousness, glad you sorted it out. Make sure to get new drivers before getting to all the fun stuff!

bad cable or hub?

try using a rear usb 2.0 port

did you install the mobo chipset and usb drivers?

The cables are probably fine, and I can't really check the other things at the moment.

Could the way the lights on the motherboard are working be used to diagnose the problem? I noticed that some lights are always solid, while others are usually blinking (but become solid after a while). Could this be used to diagnose the problem?

I did, but the gtx 970 fans aren't running.
Maybe there's a problem with the power supply, where it only powers certain things?

Make sure they are pressed in firmly and the video card is in the slot all the way.

Doesn't matter if NONE are labeled; the ones for PCIE and CPU are keyed a unique way so u can't plug one into the other.

Are RAMs working ok? That may be it... Have you tried them in another motherboard?

No GPU fans powering on is quite normal; that is how most newer GPUs are. They should run "deaf" or "very quiet" modes until a load is applied that raises the GPU temp to a point of needing the cooling.

However, your Power Supply, CPU, and Case Fans should all power on though when the system is turned on via the Case's front power button. If not check the Motherboard where the Case's Front I/O connects.

Your Display should be securely connected to GPU and also Display powered on and selected to the correct input (as many Display have many) prior to PC power-up.

If GPU has DVI, VGA can not work on DVI-D, D=Digital Only
For VGA, connect it via GPU-supplied DVI adapter and connect to DVI-I port.

turn off pc and remove evga gtx 970.
connect video cable at z170 video port.
turn on computer.

if you can see the desktop using the built-in gpu of the intel processor, then perhaps the external gpu is faulty or the psu cannot power enough juice to the external gpu.

use any other known/working video cable + video ports (hdmi, dvi, dsub/vga, dp).
