Desktop and Laptops typically do not have that. These devices should have a separate analog jack for each Speakers/Headphones/Mic and as such the adapter you speak of should not be needed. To hear yourself from the Mic you need to un-mute the Mic under Playback. Which normally u do not want and it mostly for test purposes.
For Windows ensure of what the Default is for Playback & Recording. But also, each App (such as TeamSpeak, Skype, Steam) may have options of their own which all must be set, as the OS defaults might might auto-apply to certain apps.
