8gb 1600mhz or 16gb 1333mhz ram?
Purely for gaming, I feel like the 1600mhz would be better, as not many games should need that much, and if it is using less then 8gb, I assume that the excess ram wouldn't help performance in anyway, but just want to make sure.

8GB of RAM remians quite enough for most games these days, but another 8GB won't hurt either.

The speed of the RAM matters very little.

also depends on timings

1333 cl9 is generic
some 1600 kits are slower
to compare
speed / cl = value (higher = better)
1333 cl9 = 148
1600 cl11 = 145

8GB is good enough for gaming but 16GB is even better if you do heavy multitasking. More than 16GB is overkill.

Size & type ( DDR3 / DDR4) matters way more than speed and CAS timings.
I would just go for a 1600Mhz 16GB kit with the lowest CAS latency possible. :)

This looks excellent if you're looking for DDR3 memory:

G.SKILL TridentX Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600Mhz CAS 7

If you're looking for DDR4 memory: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0123ZCD36 - $99
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-2133MHz CAS 13

16GB. It will matter later

With RAM buy more, don't buy speed because very few applications are memory bandwidth limited. Buying high speed RAM only makes sense for systems where you need a bit of flexibility for FSB overclocking.

Windows is very smart with RAM usage. If you have more, it will make better use of it. Mine will typically use more than 8GB.

I already have 1 stick of 8gb 1600mhz ram, but a friend of mine has 2 leftover sticks, each 8gb ram at 1333mhz new in box (I checked, they do work) I'm wondering if I should take them and use them, or if I should just stay with my 8gb 1600mhz atm. I will keep the 1600mhz stick for later though.

16gb 1600, dual channel (2x8) if you're feeling froggy. Good luck have fun!

I have found the best "median" to look for is 1866mhz with CAS 9 at 1.5v
Azza ☠ 19 Okt 2015 @ 4:05pm
You want 1600MHz or 1866MHz @ CL9 timing or lower, with 1.5 voltage. This would be optimal for gaming purposes. 8GB is fine for gaming, 16GB would just be used for apps and multitasking.

Aka: Ignore the 1333MHz - it will just slow you down and bottleneck the memory more. Stick with 8GB @ 1600MHz. If your motherboard supports Duel channel memory, then get two sticks and place them in the colour-coded slots (1|3 or 2|4). Duel channel will work together, making it even faster access (as they can both be accessed at the same time). Avoid mixing different spec memory as it won't work or just default to the slowest performance. Ensure under your BIOS > Advanced memory settings, to set the XMP profile for optimal performance.

Mixing memory moduls is not recommended. They have to be exact the same brand and model. Mixing memory modules can result in memory related errors and BSOD's.

Yes I know that, thats why I'm asking if I should stay with what I have, or what he's offering.
