144hz and Gsync with a GTX 980 SC
Im looking at this BenQ XL2420G 24-Inch Screen LED-lit LCD Gsync TN Monitor. It's about $650 Canadian, and I'm hoping to get it for about $400-450 over the holiday season with sales. Is this a good match for the GPU, will i be able to take advantage of the high refresh rate? Should I wait and get a 144hz IPS panel with Gsync when the prices drop on them? Im running a 60hz IPS panel right now, and I like the image quality and colors, but I'd like a higher refresh rate and Gsync. As a rough guide, I can 90-130 fps in Battlefield 4 maxed out, and around 60-85 in Assassin's Creed Unity.

With a single GTX 980, you can kick in G-SYNC for very smooth 144Hz 1440p monitors.

Your best pick would be "Acer Predator XB270HU V2" as it's IPS panel, giving sharper, more vibrant colours - with little to no performance lost (4ms response time).

ROG SWIFT PG278Q is great too, but TN panel. TN panels tend to be faster (1ms response, if a gaming high-end monitor), but they are a tad duller colour range.

BenQ XL2420G resolution is only 1080p (1920x1080) and also TN panel - It's a great pick too, don't get me wrong. Just approx 60% less pixels, but would give a higher FPS. However, the GTX 980 doesn't really start to shine and show off it's full beast mode, till it gets to the 1440p resolution sweet spot. If I was you, looking to upgrade monitors, I would personally save up for the "Acer Predator XB270HU V2" and then drool in hardcore gaming, while being nicely future proofed too (add SLI later on in the future for example, not that you would need it to perform).

The Acer would be my first choice, but I don't have a job yet so its way out of my price range. Im trying to stick below $450 Canadian, with $500 the max. Thats why Im trying to decide, get the BenQ on sale over Christmas, or wait until 2016 for prices to come down a bit, and some other IPS options to come out. As for 1440p, Im comfortable with 1080p. As the years go by, games are only going to get more demanding, and Im not adding/replacing my card any time soon. If the monitor I decide to get happens for be 1440p and it doesn't affect price to much, fine. I can always downscale it to 1080p if i want.

In that case:

Monitor size 24 inches or lower = Best for 1080p resolution
Monitor size 27 inches to 32 inches = Best for 1440p resolution

That BenQ XL2420G you selected is probably the best pick of any I could find, really nice for gaming purposes! You could always use DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) via Geforce Experience on some of the games which support it if you have FPS to spare.

Thanks man. I'll probably pick up the BenQ XL2411Z just to test 144hz and a TN panel. If I like it, I'll return it and order the XL2420G if it goes on sale over Christmas. The reason for the 2411 first is that I can return it locally, If i order the 2420G and don't like it, I have to pay to ship it back. I just want to be completely sure of what Im getting with 144hz and TN.

i got the BenQ XL2420G and its a amazing Monitor for gaming. everything looks so smooth and clean. i would highly recommend getting a 1080p for a 980. because at 1440p the 980 can sometimes struggle of maxing out games. and at 1080p, its perfect :)

Thanks for the input:). How do you find the colors, are they vibrant, dull or washed out? Have you gamed on an IPS panel? How do the colors compare to that? Having a nice looking game is my main thing. I don't want to buy a fast panel and FPS games are only some of what I play, and i don't play too competitivly.

i have played on a IPS before before i bought this monitor. but i play allot of first person games. so i decided to sell my IPS and get this monitor instead. don't expect the same vibrant look as a IPS. but it still looks good to watch at. just try to play around with the settings, and you should be fine. also 144hz is a big difference vs 60hz. everything looks so much smoother, and its also allot easier for the eyes. and G-sync is amazing too. meaning if the fps drops below 60 fps, it still feels smooth.

i think thats the monitor im gonna get. one last question for you, on a scale on one 1 - 10, 10 being the colors of an ips, where would you say the benQ stands?

in terms of colors. i'd probably give it a 7/10. its good but vs IPS its always going to lack. but TN does have better response time.

The difference between TN vs IPS panel is notable, but comes down to personal taste.

For example:
Asus ROG Swift (TN Panel) on the left.
Acer Predator XB270HU (IPS Panel) on the right.

Comparisons...

TN Panels = Faster response rate, slightly duller colours, and less viewing angle. Use to be the best option for gaming upon and some people will still perfer them.

IPS Panels = Brighter colours and more viewing angle. Slightly slower response time (4ms, use to be 8ms, etc). Was better for art and design, not so much gaming purposes (but now a few have faster performance making them excellent but more expensive for gaming upon).

probably around 2 years, until we see them at a lower price. however the regular the 60hz IPS monitor have already dropped in price in the last few years.

i already have a 60hz ips panel, and i like it, i just get alot of tearing and id prefer not to cap my fps with vsync

I know the why do you need this is like, why do I need the many things I have, but, why do you need Gsync with the 980? I have the TN 248Q by ASUS 144hz and push plenty of frame to it for a SMOOTH playing experience. G-SYNC is great i9f you have a hard time maintaining FPS but, a 980ti....you'll do fine. Cause 700.00 bones for a TN panel is nuts even if you are loaded
