1440p or 120hz?
I posted here a few days ago asking what monitor i should get for around $200, well i've decided I wont mind spending a little more to get something that i wont have to replace for a couple years. Im still puzzled about buying either a 1440p 60hz monitor versus a 1080p 120hz monitor so i decided theres no better place to ask than steam considering thats what the the monitor is for. I want to know what the difference is between the two in all of your gaming experiences. Not a fps competitive player online, i mainly play single player games tbh so Im not crazy about every movement count. Im leaning on 1440p as it seems to be a better future investment but if you could shed light thatd be great. Are there even games on steam that take full advantage of 1440p as of now?

Also Ive heard that it takes up much more GPU to run 1080p 120hz than 1440p 60hz.

Specs:
intel i7
10gb ram
2tb HDD
graphics card nvidia GTX 550?... I think, doesn't matter as Im going to upgrade to GTX 960/970 same time I get my monitor.

gtx970 is great for 1080p 60hz
for 1440p 60 or 1080 144 a gtx 980 would be ideal
Most 3D games support 1440p and a lot of more recent 2D ones too. Personally if I had to choose, I'd take the higher refresh rate at 1080p, though. At least for gaming.

If you do a lot of work on your PC (Office stuff for example) then 1440p would be the way to go. Being able to tile windows side by side without a horizontal scrollbar is a real boon.
Definitely the 120 hz for gaming. The smoothness is just too good to pass if you plan on gaming a lot.
Be a man and get 1440p 144hz. 1080p or 60hz are both for peasants...

The Trolls and their peasant comment crack me the FK up. 1080@144hz is fine too.

Resolution depends on the size of the monitor. But anything larger than 23 inch and 1080p becomes too blurry, just my personal opinion. But then again, real men buy 27 inch screens and larger, so 1440p is a must in that case.

27" 144hz 1080p monitors are fine too. Perfect example

Troll all you need too, facts don't lie.

Well im using a 27 inch 1440p 144hz monitor, and even then i can see the pixels if i lean even slightly forward... It depends on personal preference. Others may not have good vision to notice much difference. But i am personally waiting for a 4k 144hz gsync monitor.

It's all about pixel density for me.

At the end of the day games and their coding design are optimized and run smoother on 1080p with less hardware and power requirements. When they start coding games in DX12 and hardware requirements to obtain higher frame rates and refresh rate at higher resolutions is reduced, then I can see a value in stepping up to 2k or 4k .....just too expensive and not cost effective.

Im a man but my wallet is a peasant :(

Although this monitor would be for around 70% gaming 30% office work so it is pretty important to me. Im running a 720p monitor from 2009 so it'll be an improvement either way heh.
