It's just a scare tactic. M$ wants to perform automatic updates to your system. For some reason your installation hasn't had any updates for a while. Nothing is going to break. In fact, it's more likely to break if you do an update in my experience.

In my experience if you don't install the update within a certain length of time Win 10 just goes ahead and installs it anyway. That update is going to install no matter what you do, unless you never turn off your computer, otherwise it will install when you turn your computer back on, so you might as well just go ahead and install it.

Fun fact, there build versions of Windows 10.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-information/

- 1507 / 1511 <---- Started in 2015 year
- 1607 <---- Started in 2016 year
- 1703 / 1709 <---- Started in 2017 year
- 1803 / 1809 <---- Started in 2018 year
- 1903 / 1909 <---- Started in 2019 year
- 2004 <--- Latest build version of windows 10, which started this year 2020.

Basically if you're on a old build, and you're getting this message, it means you will no longer be getting updates for your current build when it end of service date hits, it's telling you to update to the next, or latest Windows 10 build so you can keep up to date, for security, or etc...

I assume you're on build 1809, or 1903.
1809 End of service ending on Nov 10th 2020
1903 End of service ending on Dec 8th 2020

Windows OS versions have 5 years of Microsoft support before hitting EOL. Like Dr. Shadowds mentioned, the clock starts when the version is released, not when you activate the license. A few CPU manufacturers have similar policies, complete with an MBR kill switch to ensure EOL, but they've mostly lost favor with the market for other questionable issues.

Windows 11 is supposedly coming out by the end of the year, you might want to make sure your Win10 license is activated. Microsoft released a Rombertik variant in August 2016 as part of the "Tech Support" popup campaign, in order to kill any machines running unlicensed Win 8.1.

Not suggesting you might encounter such a fun little train wreck, but it never hurts to check.
what does EOL mean? in any event, my windows 10 license is activated. now, do i have some time where i can wait for a little while to let microsoft install the new version on windows 10 or should i let it install the new windows 10 ASAP? and is it that easy where my computer and microsoft do all the work and i just sit there until its complete, or are there things that i must do that im not aware of? dr shadowds said i have until november or december.

im gonna edit this and add some important details right now. i just looked and i already have the 2004 build. did this happen after i restarted my pc earlier today and it automatically installed updates and the new windows 10 version? i did not have the 2004 build before i restarted my pc earlier today

End of Life, meaning it no longer gets standard updates and ONLY if any at all will get important updates. Meaning it can be at risk for vulnerabilities unless Microsoft decides to release a hotfix.

Are you absolutely sure the warning actually came from Windows and not a Virus or Malware?

In the Cortana search box type winver and run it, post the version of Windows it says you're currently on as someone previously asked you to do

that's usually the case.. i'm all for updates, but when i choose to install/download them.. got fed up with my system automatically rebooting while being used., so I outsmart MS. i blocked all traffic to the windows update server via my router. so not only can't the PC install them, it can't download them until i feel like it :steamhappy::steammocking:
