Change resolution automatically for a game?
I have my desktop at 8K resolution for my 4K display thanks to Virtual Super Resolution. I'm playing God of War which doesn't have exclusive fullscreen, so I can't change resolution ingame, not even with borderless fullscreen, and, needless to say, the performance gets a huge hit. I can lower the rendered resolution, but performance is still much worse than at native 4K.

Is there anyway to force desktop resolution to change automatically just for this particular game?

Yes unfortunately this particular game does not have exclusive Full Screen.

So if you have Desktop set to 8K screen res for example and want GoW to display @ 4K instead of 8K; set in-game Settings > Display to Borderless > then change the Render Scale to 50%. Or leave the Render Scale at 100% and then apply something like DLSS and then that setting will lower the render scaling resolution based on the quality preset.

You can't in GoW, that's the whole problem.
It's only option are Desktop Res via Borderless
Or select Windowed Mode and have a lower screen res; in a window that's looking like you're on Win95. These games if ran as Windowed, they could at least abide by my OS Desktop Theme Colors; like Black and Red; which they do not and simply display the default OS Light Theme BS that I can't stand.

So Desktop Res + Borderless + Adjust Render Scale % is the only way in the GoW games on PC.

I got over that myself and simply do the following...
1440p 21:9 Monitor for Gaming
2160p 16:9 Monitor for Accessory Display

With the 2160p Monitor I can use AMD VSR or NVIDIA DSR to display a screen res up to 8K if I want to. Overall the 4K screen made more sense for an accessory screen since it easily displays 4x as much stuff on-screen at 4K compared to 1080p. 4K does not make a good gaming screen though since 21:9 (or wider) is simply way superior.

Changing the rendered resolution is not enough, even with AMD FSR 2.0 rendering it to 1440p. If I change the desktop to 6K and then ingame I set it to 4K, then yes, I get good performance.

I did try Radeon Super Resolution (DLSS for AMD), but it worsens the graphics significantly, and the game doesn't allow me to increase rendered resolution beyond 1800p. I don't see this as a good option, as my PC can run this game very well at high settings, evidently.

I tried a program called Res-o-matic to change desktop resolution when a program is executed. It only works very briefly, as the resolution returns to 8K even before the game launches.

If there's no alternative, then i guess I'll have to set the desktop res to 6K before playing. I have it set to 8K by default because some games don't recognize Virtual Super Resolution unless it's set in the desktop, like Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, and they really benefit from it. But God of War is the first game being problematic about this.

The performance issues are because you have the Desktop set to 8K. You have to account for that mo matter what you run gamea at. Change the Desktop to natuve screen res for proper performance in games along with the ability to see all your pixels at 1:1

Or get a better GPU and run two Monitors like I suggested. There's a big reason I run two screens in two different resolutions like that.

Having one screen and setting it to 8K and then wondering why you have issues, we'll duh

But this is the first and only game that's has been a problem, and it's because it lacks basic rendering options. Having the desktop at 8K has been an advantage any other time.
