Try setting the Device Audio in Windows to 16bit 44khz. Some games can crash when it's set higher and Win7 and later tends to default to 24bit 48Khz
but it was not the game that crashed but the system.
Whatever actually goes to use the Audio could be the trigger. How do you know it's a Driver issue?

I still like to know what Updates you are referring to. Since there is no updates for Win7/8 for years now. You might get an update for Defender, that's about it. That can't hurt anything.

Is this a Desktop PC or a Laptop?

Can you run CPU-Z and do a validation and share that link in here after you have done that.
i chose not to update until recently. i updated in hopes of getting more games to run on my gtx 770m. certain games will only start when it is disabled. one of the updates led to an instability. my sound card used to crash without crashing the system. i lost the sound but, nothing else. after a windows update, it was changed from just the sound card crashing to the entire system crashing.
Update what exactly?

Win7/8 are dead, so are the Drivers for those OS.

If a game does not run, or run well, you can't change that.

Mobile GTX 7xx series is simply too old.

As far as the Audio, disable that onboard audio entirely and use USB audio as a means to have a better audio chipset.

Best bet would be a clean install of Win10 64bit 22H2. That Laptop would easily support it and would more likely run even better since Win8 is junk, worse then Win7 ever was.
that would cost me a lot. the onboard sound card is not bad, it was just messed up by an update. if i found out what update that was, i would be able to uninstall it.
Well sure, try that see if the problem continues.
Getting USB Audio would not be expensive. Neither would the move to Win10.
installig windows 10 from scratch would cost me around 1200NOK. i do not have any free USB ports. 1 is used for mouse, 1 is used for keyboard(special keyboard that i use for star trek online), 1 is used for controller and the last one will be used for an external harddrive. the external harddrive is purchased, i just have not connected it. i need more storage space.
Keyboard + Mouse + Controller can easily run off a USB Hub.

You don't need the External HDD connected whilst Gaming. That's more for storage/work stuff.

Game Controller is only needed "sometimes"

Win10 won't cost anything to install and keep.

Either way, you need to make some changes.

i do need it connected while gaming. i will store my larger games on it, like final fantasy 15, halo the master chief collection and other games i play rarely. i have no USB hubs to spare, both is in use at all times on other pcs. my table is also so full that i do not have room for it. most of my games use a controller and it bugs when i take it in and out. it tends to switch to player 2. the cost for windows 10 is around 1200NOK. it is not free, unless you pirate it. i will not pirate it. there does seem to be a free update from windows 8.1 however. i might use that if steam or star trek online stops working in windows 8.1.

Does the Laptop not have room inside for 2x internal drives? Most Laptops that size would usually have room for 2x minimum drives.

You don't pirate Win10/11, you simply download from MS, make a USB flash drive with it, using Rufus or the Media Creation Tool. Then do a clean install of the OS. Nothing further to do beyond that. Activating Win10/11 is optional.

You can't freely activate Win10 from Win7/8 anymore though, they stopped this long ago already. There is no point to staying on Win7/8 any longer.

USB hubs exist and Windows 10 is free to download directly from MS and can be installed and even if you don't have a license key, their installation just gives you access to use it like any operating system but with some limitations like you can't change the wallpaper and there was something with the updates you can't seem to get the major ones directly and some security updates can't be downloaded.
if you have a license key built into the bios it will detect and activate windows 10 and even if you go back to win 8 for some reason it should be able to activate it again.

This right here is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as you can see.
Basicly Windows became like WinRAR at this point. Nagware.

Win10 un-activated has no limits as far as Windows Updates are concerned. There is not that much to get through there anyways if you do a clean install of Win10 64bit 22H2.

Un-activated Win10 is just the lack of user customization and water-mark, which you can easily unlock all of that through some simple Registry changes.

Not to mention that the enterprise versions come in trial versions for 90 days to use if you don't have active license.

No one needs any license activated on Win10 or 11 Home/Pro to fully use it.
